Rat Dung & Bugs

The FDA allows rat dung and bugs into processed foods, simply because there is no way of keeping it out.

I gave up processed foods because there is absolutely no way to guarantee it does not contain gluten.

As I was cooking breakfast this morning I realized that not only does my food NOT contain gluten, but is also does NOT contain any rat dung or bugs.

Depends, if you eat rice, there may well be bugs in it - though you won't see them alive if it's fresh. :-)

I'm not sure how to break this to you but fresh food also gets bugs and bug parts. I'm not too keen on rat dung but a few bug parts won't do you any harm.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that. Especially if you get organic produce... all those little bugs on the lettuce! Wash carefully! (Or just get some extra B-12, not really a big deal.)

I did get freaked out when I saw a full grown, live caterpillar in my romain lettuce once. It had been in the fridge, so it moved awful slow, but it was big and squoodgy. Yuck!

I once got half a bee in my salad at a resaurant. I was a little freaked out because I had eaten half the salad before I found it and I wondered where the other half of the bee was! It turned me off of salad for a while.

God bless,

Hey, if you can see it you can get rid of it! In processed food you can't see it because it's all ground up, and it all looks the same.

Yet another reason to enjoy the better tasting British chocolates....

Hey, while your on the subject, my friend works for an American Chocolate company, and said that their chocolate has roaches ground up in it... There is no way to get rid of all the roaches surrounding the cocoa, so they are ground up with the cocoa. Yet another reason to enjoy the better tasting British chocolates....

That's disgusting! :o . Why is it so hard to keep a factory clean...after all, if my family can keep an apartment clean and free of roaches with no difficulty, why can't a commercial factory, with all its employees, stay clean? It's ridiculous...I think it's just laziness on the food manufacturers' part.....YUCK!

As for the rest of these examples: yuck. I guess you could say, however, that a bug could slip into any food...and although it may not be common to find bugs in certain products....they could be found anywhere.

I once heard something crazy about rat hair being in peanut butter...a product I really enjoy. Does anybody know anything or have anything to say about this. I use Skippy or Jif....does this problem affect, perhaps, just the smaller, "rinky-dink" companies or is it actually an issue? I know this is a weird question, but I am interested and it's kind of strange to call up Skippy and ask them if they put rat hair or let rat hair get into their peanut butter.... :)

I'll apologize later

Yes, I meant if you had celiac disease but went gluten-free before screening, your results would end up false-negative. As @trents mentioned, this can also happen when a total IGA test isn't done.

I found at Disney springs and Disney they have specialist that when told about dietary restrictions they come and talk to you ,explain cross contamination measures tsken and work with you on choices. Its the one place I dont worry once I've explained I have celiac disease.  Thier gluten free options are awesome.

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!
