I have been reading lots of posts and am unsure of a few things. How strict do you need to be with a newly diagnosed 3 1/2 year old in terms of cross contamination. Do you really need to buy a new toaster and get rid of cutting boards? I also have been reading about sun screen and play doh. Does all of that really impact you that severely? I'm sorry if I sound ignorant, we haven't had our meeting with the diatician yet. I'm scared to death to go to a restaurant or put anything in his mouth. Thanks for your help!

You for sure need a new toaster and your child cannot play with play-doh! Sunscreen is very messy and goes all over. I know I get some in my mouth but I also get rashes and/or itchy from gluten on my skin. Your child may delevelop those reactions at some point, too.

The best example of hw bad cross contamination would be Kaiti's post with pizza. If you pour a household cleaner on top of a pizza and then wipe it off is the pizza still safe to eat? No, it's not. Gluten is a poison to us and just scrapping it off doesn't get rid of it.

When you are out with your child just keep things clean around him.

This is how strict I am, because a small crumb I can't see will make me sick. I clean everything off at work that I have to touch with alcohol wipes. I also wear vinyl gloves when I do it. I clean everything phone, mouse, desk, keyboard absolutely everything. I go t the bathroom and even when I go to open the door I do it with a paper towel.

      It seems crazy to me that even when you call a manufacturer they can't, in this day and age, answer the simple question about what exactly is in their product!!

      Thank you very much for your response. Since I got this advice I called Pepsid manufacturer and they could not give a definite answer. Basically,  there is no final testing and they do not guarantee anything. So I went and got farmotidine from Wagmans that was marked gluten-free and also our pediatrician gave us a prescription for farmotidine that was also gluten-free. So there are other options there thankfully. In case someone will come across of this dilemma.

When i was diagnosed there was zero support and few dieticians and Dr understood celiac disease.  I typically guide a newly diagnosed celiac to a whole food diet to easily transition to the gluten free lifestyle

      Your gluten-free journey sounds like a lot of trial and error—especially working in a deli where gluten exposure is constant! The eye-watering issue could be an airborne gluten sensitivity (like flour dust irritating your eyes) or even a mild wheat allergy, since you’re around it daily. A daily antihistamine (like Claritin or Zyrtec) might help if it’s allergy-related, but avoiding airborne gluten as much as possible (masking, washing hands/face often) is key. For travel, pack safe snacks (protein bars, nuts) and research gluten-free translation cards for Aruba. On flights, opt for packaged gluten-free meals or eat beforehand. Many gluten-free foods and baking mixes contain xanthan gum or other gums like guar gum. Although they are both gluten-free, they may cause IBS-type issues in some people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity:   You’re doing all the right prep—trust your research and enjoy your trips!
