HELLO All! I was wondering whether antigladin antibody iga test was an accurate way to diagnois celiac dx. My test came back at 22 and anything over 20 is considered positive according to the lab I used. I have problems with constipation, but no other symptoms. Can this be fasley elevated? My dr does not want to do anyother testing and told me to start a gluten free diet. Is this a sensitive test detected only in gluten allergies? I would appreciate some help on this test.

thanks!!!

Bette

Well....is that the only test that he ran? There is a whole panel of tests that should be run to properly screen for Celiac. Anti-gliadin IgA is only 1 of the tests. There are other tests in the panel that are much more sensitive and specific for Celiac. I wouldn't go gluten free until you get some other tests done. Can you ask for a referral to a GI dr or get a second opinion? If you do get other blood work and it is positive, the next step is usually an endoscopy & biopsy for diagnosis. That is the "gold" standard now, but it may not be in the future. Some drs will diagnosis off of highly positive bloodwork and dietary response alone.

Here are the tests in the panel:

Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA

Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG

Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA

Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA

Total Serum IgA

IMHO you have a good doctor there. Personally I would get on the diet and stay on it. I am sure your doctor was going by more than just your blood test to give you your diagnosis. Many have had to fight to just get the tests. The truest test of gluten intolerance is your response to the diet, does it relieve the problems you are having. I tested negative over and over again but I clearly had full blown celiac disease upon diagnosis by my allergist thru elimation diet. I was very close to wheelchair bound from arthritis and ataxia to say nothing of the Chrons type GI problems. Within 6 months gluten-free I could run up stairs for the first time in years. If you feel you do not trust the doctors diagnosis you could perhaps think of enterolab testing to confirm it, but after a short time gluten-free you may not feel the need.

I agree with this statement... you have a good Dr., go gluten free and get on with the business of being healthy.

Wondering if anyone knows whether Lindt chocolate balls are gluten free. The Lindt Canadian website says yes but the Lindt USA website says no. The information is a bit confusing.

I didn’t know there were different types of CT. I’m not sure which I had. It just said CT scan with contrast.

I had the same thing happen to me at around your age, and to this day it's the most painful experience I've ever had. For me it was the right side of my head, above my ear, running from my nerves in my neck. For years before my outbreak I felt a tingling sensation shooting along the exact nerves that ended up exactly where the shingles blisters appeared. I highly recommend the two shot shingles vaccine as soon as your turn 50--I did this because I started to get the same tingling sensations in the same area, and after the vaccines I've never felt that again.  As you likely know, shingles is caused by chicken pox, which was once though of as one of those harmless childhood viruses that everyone should catch in the wild--little did they know that it can stay in your nervous system for your entire life, and cause major issues as you age.
