Question On Blood Test Results And Cheating

I went the a new doctor a couple weeks ago. My IGG, IGA and TTG are now all negative, supposedly because of my strict gluten free diet. The thing is, I have cheated on a fairly regular basis, either purposely or on accident. In fact, I went a whole week at the end of April eating whatever I wanted (after a visit to a very bad GI). I had a biopsy last September which was positive at that time but the new doctor commented that she would have preferred to see it.

So my question is, is it now possible that I do not have celiac and the diagonosis was wrong? I do feel sick sometimes after ingesting gluten, but was not sick before the diagonosis. My mom was diagonosed and therefore I had the blood test. I was however extremely sick and hospitalized when I was pregnant about 6 months before the blood work. Could I be causing damage anyway, with bloodwork being OK?

Very confused and any feedback would be appreciated. <_<

You could absolutely be causing damage without having a positive blood test result. You don't get antibodies in the blood stream until you've done enough damamge to the intestines that the antibodies can pass through. And some people react more strongly than others, doing damage without having a lot of symptoms. A biopsy is the classic method of diagnosis, and I'm unaware of any false positives on a biopsy. I would say you are celiac, and to reduce your risk of complications, should stop cheating. ;-) (But you knew I'd say that. ;-) )

I've always sort of questioned this myself, wondering about a possible false positive of celiac disease. My blood and biopsy were both positive, but I have many health problems that do not relate to celiac disease and have often wondered if it was in fact another disease. You can't have a false positive biopsy, either your villi are damaged or they aren't, however, I imagine there are conditions we as non-doctors are not familiar with, that could cause your villi to be damaged like that. If your Mother has celiac disease, though, and you did test positive as well, then I'd guess you do have this disease.

I'm not sure that false positives exist for blood tests either - not when taken as a whole panel. Gliandin is the protein in wheat, and if you're forming anti-gliandin antibodies, the only thing you could be reacting to is gliandin, the protein in wheat. ;-)

It takes months for the blood to raise and lower enough to be shown in a blood test. I really don't think you can have a false posotive in any sort of way. Also if you feel better on the diet then you most likely have it.

I have had digestive problems since early childhood, am now approaching age 76. I have been diagnosed with ibs, lactose intolerance, Nerd-Gerd (Nerd is a form of Gerd that does not cause serious damage to the esophagus, or at least hasn't yet). I had my gallbladder removed in Feb, Continue to have same burning up and down digestive tract esophagus to rectum as before. Burning pain centers in upper abdomen under my right center rib cage. I have alternating problems with constipation and diarrhea. Had alot of constipation as a chld and teenager. Use of enemas, medications to start bowel action and stop it. Now I am having stools with the diarrhea episodes that start with little tiny hard bits of stool and progress to large amounts of "squiggles", stooles that make me think they come directly from my smallintestine. The burning mentioned above does go towared my right shoulder . I have had the blood tests for celiac which were taken at my local clinic and sent to Mayos for evaluation. All the results came back negative, in fact very low on the scale. Could give you the exact numbers, but forgot to put the paper back in my purse before coming to the library. My doctor thinks that Mayos probably won't consider doing a biopsy with such low numbers . I think the gliadin

was 2 out of 25. I told him I plan to go on a celiac diet anyway and he suggested I see the clinic dietician. I saw her yesterday and got a third celiac diet list I think that is from Minnesota's State health association. I also have the Celiac Diet list from this board and one from an Elaine on USA Sillyaks. We agreed that I would start with the Minnesota diet list which is somewhat more liberal than the other two and proceed from there if I don''t feel better , that is go to the stricter diets. The dietician's last comment was that it would be nice to have a diagnosis before going on one of the stricter diets /. I am continuing to eat some wheat products daily, bought a loaf of rye bread which is something I almost never eat otherwise. My digestion definitely doesn't like it. I wonder if the time of day, or the amount of gluten I ate at the meal just preceding the blood tests could have influenced them? I hate to continue eating gluten for the length of time it seems to take to be seen at Mayos and I guess I would like a diagnosis. I have been eating 2-3 slices of wheat bread a day, spaghetti, oatmeal, whole wheat macaroni. I rarely bake or make desserts . This evening the burning is extending across my whole upper ab under my right ribs. Perhaps I am just allergic to wheat and don't actually have celiac? The above messages bring this thought to mind. Thanks for input. Maybe I just have to write a letter to the gastro people at Mayos. I have seen several Drs there before but they always have said "ibs" . I guess this could also be something connected with post gallbladder problems/. there were no stones in the gallbladder, but apparently it was not functioning properly. Was enlarged with thick bile . I wonder why I have thick bile and if it is continuing to be thick enough to block the tubes so it can't flowinto the small intestine like it's supposed to. My stools are brown, though on the dark brown side. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I understood that this can be like cancer in remission. Only this will always come back!

This happened to me as well. What’s weirder is that within a couple hours of taking paxlovid it subsided. I thought maybe I got glutened but after reading your post not so sure.

Hi Tiffany. Thank you for writing your dituation and  circumstancesin such detail and so well writte, too. I particularly noticed what you wrote about brain for and feeling like your brain is swelling and I know from my own experiences that's how it feel and your brain really does swell and you get migraines.    Way back when I was in my 20s I read a book by 2 MD allergist and they described their patient who came in complaining that her brain, inside her cranium, was swelling  and it happened when she smelled a certain chemical she used in her home. She kept coming back and insisting her brain actually swelled in her head. The Drs couldn't explain this problem so they, with her permission, performed an operation where they made a small opening through her cranium, exposed her to the chemical then watched as she brain did swell into the opening. The DRs were amazed but then were able to advise her to avoid chemicals that made her brain swell. I remember that because I occasionally had brain fog then but it was not a serious problem. I also realized that I was becoming more sensitive to chemicals I used in my work in medical laboratories. By my mid forties the brain fog and chemicals forced me to leave my  profession and move to a rural area with little pollution. I did not have migraines. I was told a little later that I had a more porous blood brain barrier than other people. Chemicals in the air would go up into my sinused and leak through the blood brain barrier into my brain. We have 2 arteries  in our neck that carry blood with the nutrients and oxygen into the brain. To remove the fluids and used blood from the brain there are only capillaries and no large veins to carry it away so all those fluids ooze out much more slowly than they came in and since the small capillaries can't take care of extra fluid it results in swelling in the face, especially around the eyes. My blood flow into my brain is different from most other people as I have an arterial ischema, adefectiveartery on one side.   I have to go forward about 20 or more years when I learned that I had glaucoma, an eye problem that causes blindness and more years until I learned I had celiac disease.  The eye Dr described my glaucoma as a very slow loss of vision that I wouldn't  notice until had noticeable loss of sight.  I could have my eye pressure checked regularly or it would be best to have the cataracts removed from both eyes. I kept putting off the surgery then just overnight lost most of the vision in my left eye. I thought at the I had been exposed to some chemical and found out a little later the person who livedbehind me was using some chemicals to build kayaks in a shed behind my house. I did not realize the signifance  of this until I started having appointments with a Dr. in a new building. New buildings give me brain fog, loss of balance and other problems I know about this time I experienced visual disturbances very similar to those experienced by people with migraines. I looked further online and read that people with glaucoma can suffer rapid loss of sight if they have silent migraines (no headache). The remedy for migraines is to identify and avoid the triggers. I already know most of my triggers - aromatic chemicals, some cleaning materials, gasoline and exhaust and mold toxins. I am very careful about using cleaning agents using mostly borax and baking powder. Anything that has any fragrance or smell I avoid. There is one brand of dishwashing detergent that I can use and several brands of  scouring powder. I hope you find some of this helpful and useful. I have not seen any evidence that Celiac Disease is involved with migraines or glaucoma. Please come back if you have questions or if what I wrote doesn't make senseto you. We sometimes haveto learn by experience and finding out why we have some problems. Take care.       The report did not mention migraines.

Hi Jmartes71 That is so much like my story! You probably know where Laytonville is and that's where I was living just before my 60th birthday when the new Dr. suggested I could have Celiacs. I didn't go on a gluten challange diet before having the Celiac panel blood test drawn. The results came back as equivical as one antibody level was very high but another, tissue transaminasewas normal. Itdid show I was  allergic to cows milk and I think hot peppers. I immediately went gluten free but did not go in for an endoscopy. I found an online lab online that would do the test to show if I had a main celiac gene (enterolab.com). The report came back that I had inherited a main celiac gene, DQ8, from one parent and a D!6 from the other parent. That combination is knows to sym[tons of celiac worse than just inheriting one main celiac gene. With my version of celiac disease I was mostly constipated but after going gluten-free I would have diarrhea the few times I was glutened either by cross contamination or eating some food containing gluten. I have stayed gluten-free for almost 20 years now and knew within a few days that it was right for me although my recovery has been slow.   When I go to see a  medical provide and tell them I have celiacs they don't believe me. The same when I tell them that I carry a main celiac gene, the DQ8. It is only when I tell them that I get diarrhea after eating gluten that they realize that I might have celiac disease. Then they will order th Vitamin B12 and D3 that I need to monitor as my B12 levels can go down very fast if I'm not taking enough of it. Medical providers haven't been much help in my recovery. They are not well trained in this problem. I really hope this helps ypu. Take care.
