I was looking into maybe getting into the reserves after I finish college and was wondering if having celiac disease will keep me out of the service specificly the air force ? Thanks.

Yes, I believe so. My little brother Chris was interested too and supposedly, the military can not support Celiacs - they can't feed them!:(. I think there was a article earlier this year in "Lifeline"? I would just email the Air Force recruiting center directly.

Damn I was worried about that. I had looked around and found info on meals and stuff saying they offered a variety from like meatloaf to salads and stuff like that but I would be worried about the MRE's(meals ready to eat) which would be a gamble. I'll have to try and ask a recruiter. I heard that their is exceptions to a lot of things so maybe I can get a doc's note saying I can handle the physical just not the meals :D

I'm on another forum with a guy who has celiac disease and is in the Army. He says that if you're diagnosed before joining they will not accept you. He was already in and is trying to hang on until retirement. Having celiac disease and being in the field with your unit would be nearly impossible. Going somewhere like Iraq or into combat would be completely impossible.

I had a feeling it would be that way. If you were in before Im sure they would deal with it. Im still not going to give up on the possibilty :D

      They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

      In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

      This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

      I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
