Anyone know if spelt is okay or not? ;) I found it in the wheat free section, but when I tried to look up rather or not it's gluten free, I find conflicting info! Anything ya'll know is appreciated! :D

Spelt (Triticum spelta) was an important wheat species in Europe from the Bronze Age to Roman times. It now survives as a relict crop in Central Europe, but has found a new market as a health food. Spelt is sometimes considered a subspecies of the closely related species common wheat (T. aestivum), in which case its botanical name is considered to be Triticum aestivum subsp. spelta.

Meaning, spelt is a type of wheat and not gluten free.

When I was first diagnosed, a lady at Trader Joes told me that their spelt bread was gluten-free (it actually said gluten-free on the package).

So I ate some, and avout died (okay, not really- but I felt like I was going to).

I should have known that she didn't know what she was talking about when she asked if sugar had gluten in it :blink: .

I learned the hard way that spelt contains gluten.

It's too bad, because the break was really good. I should have known that it was too good to be true.

I had bought a package of spelt bread, toasted it, and made a grilled cheese that smelt and looked like heaven.....Then I thought I better check on this before I eat it. I thought it was too good to be true! <_<

      Thanks @Scott Adams. Do you know if Kirkland Signature supplements share facility and production lines with other products containing gluten?  I'm worried that I'll react to this brand just like I did with other gluten-free labelled supplement brands.

      This is a really common area of confusion. Most natural cheeses (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, Parmesan, brie, camembert, and most blue cheeses) are inherently gluten-free, and you’re right that the molds used today are typically grown on gluten-free media. The bigger risks tend to come from processed cheeses: shredded cheese (anti-caking agents), cheese spreads, beer-washed rinds, smoke-flavored cheeses, and anything with added seasonings or “natural flavors,” where cross-contact can happen. As for yeast, you’re also correct — yeast itself is gluten-free. The issue is the source: brewer’s yeast and yeast extracts can be derived from barley unless labeled gluten-free, while baker’s yeast is generally safe. When in doubt, sticking with whole, unprocessed cheeses and products specifically labeled gluten-free is the safest approach, especially if you’re highly sensitive.

      Thanks a lot for your response! Can you maybe specify which kind of cheeses I should be cautious about? Camembert/Brie and blue cheeses (the molds of which are nowadays mostly grown on gluten-free media, though, so I've read, right?) or other ones as well? Also, I was under the impression that yeast is generally gluten-free if not declared otherwise. Is that false?
