Gluten Free Bakehouse Bread

I went to Whole Foods to buy some GFB reg. bread but found there are two versions and I don't know what the difference is. I love their sun dried tomato and cin. raisin breads but I'm looking for the plainest flavor bread so I can make sandwiches or toast and such. The two breads in question are the Prairie Bread and the Sandwich bread. Does anyone know what the difference in the two is tastewise?

Tiffany,

The plainer of the two breads would be the Sandwich Bread. I used to eat that, and it's very good.

The Prairie Bread, as I remember, has seeds and possibly other things mixed in. :)

Thanks Patti! I thought it was you that posted about this bread but then I went to look it up and didn't find it.

Our Whole Foods is moving next month. I'm happy that the store is going to be fabulous BUT it's going to be over five miles futher from me now. In any case, the current store is closing mid Sept. and will not open back for two weeks so in case there are others out there who shop at WF/Harry's in Duluth, keep in mind to stock up as you won't be able to shop at that local for about two weeks.

My new fave store is Return 2 Eden and you live in the Metro Atlanta area, do yourself a favor and check it out. So far they have the most gluten-free items of any place I've found around town. Lucky for me it's right off 85 which I have to travel to see clients so I just take a small cooler and shop on the way home from meetings.

Most prices are either lower than WF of the same. The owner decided to try and build their gluten free offerings in hopes to increase business. All the gluten free items are marked with purple tags - it's simply wonderful!

Ooh--we used to love Harry's! (No Whole Foods back then!) We'd go most Sundays, after church :)

We have found that late Sunday afternoon is THE time to visit Harry's/WF. We did to go on Saturday but it's a zoo then and you know with all the label reading it's kind of hard not to be in the way of others. If I must have something for Sat. night then I run over during lunch on Friday and pick up a few things. I'm pretty excited about the new store. I guess it's something similar to one I think nini went to in Orlando but I could be mixing that up. Anyway it will be nice and I guess I'll just have to make new longer trek and be thankful that I have such a store when I know others who drive here from AL to stock up every few months or so.

I didn't go to one in Orlando, it was Sarasota, and it was phenomenal!

I am supposed to be doing something with Dr. Joe Esposito at Return to Eden next month... (a gluten free food demo!)

We are also going to be doing the same food demo at Life Grocery and at Harry's/Whole Foods in Marietta...

I've also been asked to start doing gluten-free tours at Life Grocery

i too have tried them both and they're both excellent. The prairie bread, as mentioned, has sunflower seeds and a bunch of other earthy things, so it has a nuttier taste and a nice crunch. The most simple flavor though is the sandwhich bread.

Oh, and fyi, I'd consider freezing a portion. I find mine usually spoils (even in the fridge) before I get to the end of the loaf...

Thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to getting some GFB sandwich bread soon but I still have Bry's in the freezer so hubby said no more bread until you eat what you have - lol! We have a reg. side-by-side fridge so my gluten-free stuff is taking over the small freezer. Plus I got some awesome Breads from Anna bread yesterday and I'm itching to make that too. Without question that is my FAVE gluten-free bread of all time. But you have to make it and it costs an arm and a leg. So I'll stick with GFB stuff except for special occasions (like when I want to serve others bread without them knowing it's gluten free). Bry's bread is the best bread to travel with since it's vaccuum packed you don't have to freeze it until after you open it. It's not good unless toasted but then, I have a hard time believing it's gluten free.

Whole Foods gluten free bakehouse sandwich bread is the ONLY type of gluten-free bread I like. I usually refrigerate one half and freeze the other. It is very tasty!

The banana bread is also amazing, along with the muffins (although sometimes they can be a bit dry in the middle) and the walnut brownies! :)

Hi. So sorry to hear about your shingles. There is a lidocaine cream that you can get at Walmart that will help numb the pain.  That's what I used for mine. It can't be put near your eyes or in your ears. I hope your doctor gave you valacyclovir which is an antiviral.  It does lessen the symptoms. If it is in your eyes,  see an ophthalmologist.  They have an antiviral eye drop that can be prescribed.  Shingles in the eye could cause blindness.  I was unsure whether you have celiac or not.  If you do,  follow the diet.  I believe that extra stress on your body does affect everything. Shingles can recur. If you start getting the warning signs of nerves tingling,  see the dr and start taking the valacyclovir to prevent a breakout. If I sound technical,  I am a retired pharmacist.

You are right to be proactive, as research does indicate that individuals with celiac disease can have a higher predisposition to enamel defects, cavities, and periodontal issues, even with excellent oral hygiene. While many people with celiac successfully undergo orthodontic treatment without complication, your caution is valid. It may be beneficial to seek a consultation with an orthodontist who is familiar with managing patients with autoimmune conditions or who is willing to collaborate with your daughter's gastroenterologist or a periodontist. They can perform a thorough assessment of her current oral health, discuss your specific concerns about recession and decay, and create a tailored hygiene plan. This second opinion could provide a clearer risk-benefit analysis, helping you decide if addressing the cosmetic concern of the lower teeth is worth the potential risks for your daughter, especially if they are not currently affecting function or her confidence.

This is an older article, but still helpful:

It's strange because I'm pretty sure not too long ago I picked up a loaf of bread with B vitamins, but I can't find a single one now.  Probably cutbacks, everyone's trying to save money now!
    • Scott Adams
Eating grains typically depletes certain B vitamins, so I'm not sure why they decided to fortify with calcium and iron, but hopefully we'll see more B vitamin fortification in gluten-free products going forward.
