Dairy And Hives, But Not Allergic?

My Celiac son will usually get facial hives after dairy consumption. What is a little baffling, though, is that he does not have a positive reaction to the standard skin allergy test (we just had him tested).

Another doctor ordered a blood test for the level of IgG and IgE for an array of foods, and he was very high on dairy. My allergist doesn't know how to interpret the results of this test (IgG and IgE), and insists the skin test is the gold standard.

All I know is he gets the hives after eating dairy, and his body is making antibodies to dairy, so we're just avoiding milk.

I'm interested if any others have had this happen, or could at least shed some light into what is going on.

Thanks, Patrick

I'm breaking out into hives also all the time, but I don't know why in my case. My allergist said that for foods, the skin prick tests aren't all that accurate, and that blood tests were better. He also said the best way to figure out a food allergy is by an elimination diet.

I guess different doctors have different opinions (duh), but if he reacts badly to it, and with hives no less, it looks like an allergy to me!

You're in or around Austin, right?

Food allergy testing is NOT 100% accurate - the best method is a food diary and elimination diet. Of course, you have already identified it so the hard part is done.

Yes, I'm in Austin. Do you have an allergist recommendation that is Celiac savvy?

Thanks, Patrick

I cannot tolerate casein - tight chest, hives, brain fog and diarreah, but I am not 'allergic' to it according to the allergy tests. But I've done many self-tests to re-test.

We had allergy testing done for our son because of daily hives, vomiting, excema, etc. Milk was the one thing we told the dr. we knew for sure he was allergic to because he reacted immediately by projectile vomiting. The skin test showed positive on everything they tested for EXCEPT for milk! He then did bloodwork, which showed a high-positive for milk. He explained that the skin test looks for one thing in the milk and the blood looks for something else, I believe. I don't remember exactly. Hope this helps.

I've had the same thing happen with salt, my body broke out in hives, I was shaking and had trouble breathing..went to my allergist and he gave me an EPI-Pen

I tested negative for milk allergy on the skin prick test and positive for milk allergy on the blood test. However, I tested positive for wheat allergy on the skin prick test and negative on the blood test! Go Figure! Anyway... one of the allergic reactions has gotten progressively worse overtime and I am going back for re-testing. If he had high levels on the IGG and IGE test I would suggest eliminating dairy to be on the safe side. I can help with meals ideas since I am gluten and casein free.

If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.

No I haven't had one since 2021. I rarely have more than 1 per week.

Sorry, I see that now as I reread your original post. You say you have hemorrhoids "only once a week" now. When I develop hemorrhoids, which is once every few years now, it generally takes 3-4 days for healing to take place. So, it doesn't seem like you could have much relief time between episodes if you have them weekly. Have you had a lower GI scoping done recently?

Everyday I eat a medium to large apple in the morning and a large banana at night. I eat a cup of oatmeal in the evening. The ezekiel wheat bread I eat has a good amount of fiber. I haven't dealt with constipation for at least a year. Most of the time my feces are soft.
