Had a great holiday in Los Cristianos and found eating out suprisingly easy for hubby.

Armed with a celiac.com dining card in Spanish we found the Spanish very accomodating to his diet.

Terry mainly ate steak or fish-and when we showed the waiter the dining card they would speak to the chef, come back and say 'no problem'.

My main piece of advise is to avoid English restaurants!

The only English run restaurant we went to said Terry's meal would be ok-then served it up with croutons!(wonder what the chef thought they were made from?)

Don't be put off by Pizzerias as they serve many other foods-and we found the Spanish quite knowledgable about coeliac disease.

One head waiter come out to speak to Terry and said 'Ah yes,coeliac-it's no problem with your steak, but I cannot recommend chips as the frying oil is used to fry battered dishes'

Oh wow,he knew about cross contamination!

Terry always had 'canarian potatoes' with his dinner instead of chips.

They come with two dips-Green and Red in colour.

We was informed that the Green dip was okay for Terry but not the Red.

Pleasantly suprised that it wasn't a huge problem to them, and no tutting and rolling of the eyes!

I only posted the above post in the international (outside USA) category but it's turned up here too?

Please ignore.

Ummmm, Nikki, I MOVED it here when pinning it, as I feel it belongs into the travel section. The outside USA section would have been appropriate if you LIVED in Spain. Other people travelling to Teneriffe would benefit more from what you have to say if it's in the travel section.

OOps ,sorry Ursula!

That's okay, but you see, if something isn't in the right forum, we're supposed to move it to the right one, that's one of the jobs moderators are doing here. I am not saying we're infallible and always make the right choices, but I believe that this one was right.

What you said about Teneriffe was very interesting, and if I ever go there I'll be able to check your post again. I am glad you had such a good time.

That's great that you guys were treated so well. Don't think that would have happened here in the US from what others have posted (except for some places).

It must have been nice to actually be able to get some rest amongst the fun, without having to worry so much about the food. :)

Nikki :D ,

I'm so glad that you had such a relaxing vacation without constantly having to worry about food!

How wonderful for Terry that he could eat in almost any restaurant there :)

What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks

I would not think store bought yogurt would contain gluten unless it possibly could be through an added flavoring or coloring ingredient. Otherwise, it should be naturally gluten free.  Keep in mind that some companies are capitalizing on people's fears and ignorance (nothing personal intended) by labeling foods "gluten free" that are just that way by the nature of what they are. They are hoping to create a marketing edge over their competitors by adding "gluten free" because they know it may catch attention of those new to the celiac/gluten sensitivity experience without having to cost them anything in the way of changing their manufacturing process or doing testing.

I believe the GFCO does use a common logo for certified gluten free products (those containing not more that 10ppm of gluten) but nothing universal yet from the FDA for standard gluten free products (those containing not more that 20ppm).

I have a One Pot and decided to start using it one day. I was hesitant at first making my own yogurt, but was surprised at how easy it was. I like mine better too.

Because I spend so much time reading every word on all food packaging, I personally would greatly appreciate it if there was one common gluten-free symbol written in large-enough text, and always located in the same place. That alone will make shopping easier and faster. I dread having to buy packaged food. Thank you very much for asking,
