Pre- Diabetes Symptoms In Celiac Children

Does anyone have a child that was diagnosed with celiac, and then diagnosed with diabetes type I? If so, what symptoms did your child exhibit before the diagnosis of diabetes?

My child has been recently diagnosed with celiac. One of my child's symptoms seems to suggest blood sugar problems. If my child does not eat properly the night before, (which isn't uncommon for a picky eater prior to celiac diagnosis), my child will be nauseated and vomit the following morning. Since getting on the gluten-free diet, my child's picky eating habbits have improved. Could this type of symptom still be an indication of potential diabetes?

Diabetes in children has a rapid onset. Our son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes first and celiac 10 months later.

The symptoms for him were weight loss, thirst (excessive) and peeing lots.

Is is not uncommon for children to be nauseated and even occasionally vomit with an empty stomach. My son gets like that if he is really hungry (and his blood sugar is usually normal at these times) he has a tummy ache and is nauseous. What helps him is to drink some water and then soem juice or milk before he eats any food.

There is no symptom of "potential diabetes" - symptoms develop if the diabetes is manifesting itself.

Thanks so much for your response. That is consistant with what I have read and heard. It is interesting that your child has this symptom and is diabetic, though.

I have friends who have kids that this happens to - and they have neither diabetes nor celiac. One boy gets really nauseous if he doesnt eat and he gets car sick easily. He will start munching on dry cereal to get rid of the feeling while waiting for a meal.

It has more to do with an empty stomach than with diabetes.

I have a brother in law that gets nauseous and feels really sick if he plays video games - its even listed on the cautions for playing video games. Has to do with how video games trigger the "vomit center" in the brain, in certain individuals.... and yes our brain has a"vomit center" that triggers the whole process with the right stimulus for the body

Car sickness while reading in a moving vehicle is a similar physiologic response.

Please dont worry about diabetes unless you see the definite symptoms - you ahve enough on your plate right now

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
