Worsening Of Dh When Starting gluten-free Diet?

Is this a common experience? I thought that I had read somewhere that it was, but am having trouble finding it now.

I am newly diagnosed and struggling with the large learning curve necessary for the gluten-free diet as well as DH. I am awaiting my G6PD test to come back before starting a trial of dapsone...

Thanks! Beth

Beth,

Everyone is different. I know - this is not the answer you were hoping for. Dapsone should help you immensely. It cleared up the worst of my DH symptoms in a few days (the gluten-free diet alone did not). It can take up to two years for the DH to go away (unless you are taking dapsone). So be patient and hang in there. It is tough at first, but it does get easier. If you stay gluten-free, you should be able to go off of the dapsone sometime. I have been at it for a year now - and I am extremely careful. But I had to increase my dosage to get my itching to subside.

Everybody is different. I was unusual in that mine cleared immediately. And I mean that after I went gluten-free I never took another dapsone, even though I had been taking it for 20 years.

if it's DH, don't forget to significantly reduce iodine intake for a couple weeks/months, as iodine is part of the reaction that creates the deposits that lead to DH.

So besides salt and seaweed, what should I avoid?

I wonder too. I think my husband may have that, has dermatitis for 2 yrs, dermatologist unable to get rid of it completely. How long does one have to be on gluten-free diet for the dermatitis to go away?

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
