Time To Heal

I came down with symptoms 2 months before I got pregnant with triplets. I learned what the symptoms were caused by when I found out I was pregnant. All three babies have died. How long will it take for the intestins to heal enough to get pregnant again. I may be pregnant now (1 month after misscarriage)

It really depends on how much damage was done to your body pre-diagnosis. It could take a few days to heal or it could take a few years or there could be too much damage to ever heal completely. Definitely remain 100% gluten free and hopefully this pregnancy will go full-term with no problems. BTW, I'm very sorry to hear of your losses. I will keep you in my thoughts. Let us know if you find out whether or not you're pregnant. Good luck.

Welcome to the board.

I am so sorry for your loss. Just be sure you're 100% gluten-free and your intestines will continue to heal. You don't say whether losing the babies was actually due to the celiac ... I was undiagnosed when I was pregnant and had very difficult pregnancies. I was so sick all I'd eat was bread ... I just kept getting sicker. I also got very dehydrated. Keep drinking enough fluids, you will need electrolytes, too, if you have diarrhea. Make sure the food you eat is all nutritious since lots of it doesn't get absorbed anyway.

I think you should ask your doctor about the timing of getting pregnant again. I would imagine your hormones could be messed up from the malabsorption, so I'd be sure you get your progesterone levels checked when you do get pregnant as a lot of women, not necessarily celiac, have trouble carrying a baby because of low progesterone levels. All it takes is supplementation until the placenta can take over progesterone production.

This is definately something to talk to your doctor about .... but opinions from the board are good to have so you can learn from the experience of others since doctor's experience with celiac is limited.

I'm so sorry about your losses.

I think your doctor can probably give you the best advice about how long to wait, but given that you may be pregnant now, you should probably see if you can talk to a nutritionist about what the safest way to eat for this (possible) pregnancy is, given that your intestines are presumably still damaged. It may be possible (and necessary) to take supplements in order to compensate for the damage -- one obvious (possible) supplement is folic acid, which is available in gluten-free formulas and is important to fetal neural development.

You might want to ask your doctor about getting tested for thyroid problems, also. These are more common in people with celiac disease than in the general population and can cause problems in pregnancy -- but are treatable as long as they are detected and monitored (hopefully your OB will know to do this, but it cannot hurt to double-check).

Good luck to you.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
