Okay, I Am Confused...

I don't quite understand why we have to be careful about hair dye.... Does the dye absorb through our scalp? It can't be because of the hands, because we wear gloves when we apply it..... Is it only celiacs with DH that have to worry, or all of us?

Thanks for any input.....

Karen

Well, I know that the gluten would not be absorbed through the scalp. Gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin. Obviously, a shampoo should be gluten-free.....after all, it could get in your mouth, eyes, etc. I had actually been thinking about that lately, cause I thought I had read to be careful about it, but didn't remember why. Hmm.....could it be something about if your hair gets in your mouth? I don't really know, but I had been thinking about that the past few days.

I cannot imagine why hair dye would be a problem. However, some people want to make sure EVERYTHING they use is gluten-free, which is OK.

I'm not an expert, but I have experience with the hair dye sensitivity. I have celiac disease and DH. Most hair dyes leave me with DH blisters in my scalp and on my face. It doesn't bother me on the inside, just on the outside! (And I hope no one is getting dye in their mouth. I don't think that's very tasty!)

Hi,

I don't have DH, but after I went gluten-free my scalp started to itch,

so i stopped using shampoos with wheat, but it still itches.

I use scalpicin for the itch. I am terrified to use any coloring

or perms. One time I had a perm and my scalp burned

for weeks. That was before I went gluten -free. My theory is that

I have a skin sensitivity to a lot of products and have to be careful.

I use hair dye... no problems that I know of! I did recently switch to a non-perm. color though. Hmmm... let me know if you find out anything conclusive!!! :(

I get my hair colored too, no problems with that in the past. But I think my shampoo may be affecting me??? I thought I'd read somewhere that those with celiac disease may become sensitive to other products down the line (such as hair color, shampoo, detergents, etc...) Can't recall where or when though. I'm gonna have to look through some old celiac disease research stuff. I have binders full. Maybe speak to a stylist regarding your sensitivity and see and he/she can recommend anything. Perhaps speaking w/ a dermatologist would be beneficial too.

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
