Biopsy Thursday

Hi

Im new here, and my 4 year old son has to have a biopsy on Thursday, (im from the UK so I dont know if its done different in the US) but he has to have a general anasthetic, he has had a lot of blood tests and they showed very low imunoglobulin A and he is very anemic. he has had problems since being a few months old, but no one ever took us seriouly, he has a lot of tummy pain, loose stools and when he was younger vomiting (although he does not vomit much now) he is very small in the 5th% but was 9lbs 5oz when he was born!! Plus lots of other symptoms such as mouth ulcers and burning tongue, itchy skin rashes on the backs of his legs and tirdeness

I know I have to have the test to confirm or rule this out, but I am dreading taking him for it, he will go home the same day, and as long as he does not catch a cold or cough before thursday we have to be at the childrens hospital for 8am. I know some of you here will have children that have had this done, I just feel so bad :( :(

Hi Joanne and welcome!!

I'm in the UK too and my son was diagnosed with celiac disease by biopsy a couple of weeks ago (my hubby is also a coeliac)

I really was very anxious about the whole process (especially as my son has a heart condition)

In fact,- I found the hospital to be excellent at allaying my fears. They were very professional and took great care of him.

In fact they are only under the anaesthetic for about 20 mins (the rest of the time is recovery)

My son came back bright and breezy and starving hungry, none the worse for the experience!! :D (I think it was harder on me than him!)

As a Mum I'm not going to tell you not to worry ('cos you'll do that anyway!) but it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. :)

Fingers crossed for you and your little guy - let us know how it goes.

(BTW, what hospital is he under?)

My dd is having her biopsy tomorrow... I"m also a nervous wreck :( she's 3 and basically asymptomatic, other than constipation... ugh... can we just fast forward to friday?

...I know what you mean!!. I just wanted the whole thing to be over with!

Hi

we will be going to booth hall childrens hospital in Manchester, I am a nervous wreck and have been sat at my desk most of the afternoon (since I got the phone call) trying my hardest not to cry LOL LOL in front of everyone

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified...

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
