Cheese Whiz And Cream Of Mushroom Soup

I know Progresso and Kraft will list gluten in ingredients list, but I'm trying to save time as I'm in the midst of moving while my mom is making plans for Thanksgiving. Don't have time for full label-reading grocery shopping - only the essentials....

She has a terrific brocolli bake recipe (i can post after the move YUM!), but it calls for cream of mushroom soup and Cheese Whiz.

If anyone knows a safe brand of the soup and/or knows if Cheese Whiz is gluten-free (or an alternative) that would be a huge help.

Mom is really going out of her way to make sure the holiday is safe for me, and I'd love to make anything I can easier on her. The more she can stick to her tried and true recipes, the better she'll feel.

Thanks.

I don't know if Cheese Whiz is safe or not, but I do know Velveeta is safe. As far as the Cream of Mushroom soup goes, most name brand and store brand ones are made with wheat flour and therefore out. I don't know about Progresso, as far as what they use. I have found a Cream of Mushroom soup by Health Valley that is gluten-free, they use rice flour in it, but it is not condensed. If you want a condensed type Cream of mushroom soup you can do what I did

home made cream of mushroom soup

1 small jar of mushrooms or fresh mushrooms

1/2 stick of butter

1/4 cup Orgran's All Purpose gluten-free flour

1/4 cup diced onions

2 cups of milk

salt and pepper to taste

(saute onions and mushrooms in tablespoon of butter, add rest of butter, 2 cups milk, remove from heat, stir in 1/4 cup Orgran's gluten-free all purpose flour and salt and pepper to taste, add more milk if too thick)

saaa-wheat<3 Apprentice

I've used Pacific Brand's Portabella Mushroom soup in a similar recipe and it worked really well. I do believe that I might have thickened a bit with some cornstarch, as it is not condensed. Perhaps using the Velveeta will make it a bit thicker than if you used the Cheese Wiz and with that you may not have to thicken it?

Good luck, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Cheeze whiz is gluten free. Also, Progresso's Cream of Mushroom Soups is gluten free, and tastes pretty good for being right out a can.

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

Thanks to both of you for your responses!  Sadly, even after several years of very strict gluten avoidance, I remember the symptoms well enough that I am too frightened to risk a gluten challenge— heartbeat and breathing problems are scary— Scott, thank you for the specific information— I will call around in the new year to see if I can find anyone. In the meantime, I will carry on has I have been— it’s working! Thanks also for the validation— sometimes I just feel crushed by disbelief. Not enough to make me eat gluten though—
