Avery is feeling so horrible! We can't get in to the GI doc til the 22nd of December. He is so uncomfortable he was crying before school this mornign because he was scared he'd have an accident. His bowels are so lose when he finally has them that he really doesn't have time to make it to the toilet every time. He is only 3, potty training is still a work in progress. If anyone has any suggestions as to things that might help him be more comfotable, I'd really appreciate it. His actually ped doesn't want to talk to me now, cause she made the referral.. so she says I can't take it up with the specialist.

I would call the ped. back and tell her that you can't get him in until Dec. 22 and someone needs to help you. Is it possible to try another GI instead of waiting?

I know what your going through, just keep liquids in him.It will take a while for things to get better.

My 6 year old was just diagnosed 1 week ago with Celiac D ,I've been dealing with the lose bowels for three months now.My daughter actually holds it all in ,all day at school and comes home and blows the back of the toilet off.

It's bad but ,I promise it will get better.Have you checked around to see if you can see another GI in your area.

My referal was 1 week and I saw the GI 4 days later, 2 weeks after that we went gluten free.It still seemed like forever.

I hope little Avery starts feeling better.

I'm sure you'll get some good replies on this forum,it's a real good place to learn and get support.

Can he just stay home from school until this is sorted out? I notice he's only 3 ... I wouldn't suggest it if he were already in kindergarten.

Be sure to keep him hydrated. He might need some electrolytes, too, since he has d so bad.

He is staying home from school at this point. The sad story is, there are really not any other pediatric GI docs in this area. The other docs, are all with the same office. So, if they had an opening they would have given it to me. I faxed his file to the GI doc though, and he is going to look at it and call me. Maybe squeeze him in. We'll see. He is feeling somewhat better today. He just hasn't ate much to upste the belly since yesterday.

This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

Interestingly, this thought occurred to me last night. I did find that there are studies investigating whether vitamin D deficiency can actually trigger celiac disease.  Source: National Institutes of Health https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7231074/

Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.

I will assume you did the gluten challenge properly and were eating a lot of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before your test, but if not, that could be the issue. You can still have celiac disease with negative blood test results, although it's not as common:  Clinical and genetic profile of patients with seronegative coeliac disease: the natural history and response to gluten-free diet: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5606118/  Seronegative Celiac Disease - A Challenging Case: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9441776/  Enteropathies with villous atrophy but negative coeliac serology in adults: current issues: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34764141/  Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
