Today I didn't have much to do so I thought of a few brand names and shot out e-mails for gluten-free products. I'll list the companies I contacted below. I already got one reply, from Tootsie (makers of Tootsie products, charm products, cambridge brands, and cella confections). They sent me their list in word document format....if anyone wants their list or any others I get, ask me and I'll forward the e-mail......or post the list here.....

Minute Maid

Kraft

Yoplait (subdivision of Kraft, so that e-mail didn't matter)

Hershey's

Nestle

Mars (milky ways, M&Ms, etc.)

Tootsie Roll Industries

Hormel

Boar's Head

Heinz

Duncan Hines (part of Pinnacle Foods Corporation, a company that also makes products such as Aunt Jemima syrup (gluten-free).

Campbells

General Mills

Dannon

Pinnacle Foods Corporation

I plan on e-mailing some ice cream companies later. I was really bored so I did this, but if these lists can help anyone, I'd be happy to forward or post them. The word document list from Tootsie is in a weird format, so I'll have to make it work in the post form here, but I'll post it later when I have time. I also got a reply from Hormel.......their list is in their FAQs at:

celiac3270,

Speaking of ice cream... my fiance' works for Bruster's (lucky me!) and got an e-mail from a woman inquiring about the gluten-free status last week. That was pretty cool, actually! But, the bad news is that there is too high a risk for cross-contamination for it to be considered gluten-free. At least that's what he told me. I could imagine that any place that you visit that scoops ice cream onto cones will inevitiably get cone fragments, etc into the bucket that they're scooping from. I believe their ice-cream itself is gluten-free, but the environment is too risky.

Hi - This is my first reply - just joined and am at the start of my huge learning curve! I would just LOVE to receive the lists you're getting! I'm trying to combine the need to be gluten-free with Atkins as much as I can, so am trying to stay away from such goodies as Tootsie Rolls - one of my favorites!!!

I'm really glad I found this forum - and hope I'll someday be able to be as helpful as you all seem to be!

Welcome Gail! Here's a quick-start guide that might be of some help! There are many helpful posts here... I know there might be a lot and seem overwhelming, but you can always do a search for certain products (like bar-b-q sauce or candy) when you have an opportunity.

Also, Feel free to ask whatever questions you might have and we'll be happy to help you out!

I can tell you that you won't get a list from Kraft. They'll just tell you to read the ingredients because they don't hide gluten. In fact, most of the companies you wrote to have the same policy.

Oh, and like Hormel, Heinz's list is on their web site.

richard

celiac3270 Collaborator

I was afraid of getting that reaction from Kraft...........I explained in my e-mail that I was aware of that policy............too bad. As for Heinz and Hormel, I didn't bother to check the FAQs; I just had one e-mail that I copied into every e-mail form and sent off -- it was faster that way. Thanks for the info., though

A few FAQs on Ben and Jerrys:

Gluten-free Flavors

  Question

Do you have a list of your gluten-free flavors?

  Answer

We do not have a list of gluten-free flavors. Sorry! The ingredients that we use change quite often. We do not want to claim a flavor is gluten-free, then have that list become outdated and the recipients not aware of the latest changes.

I got Nestle's list...it's annoying that all the candy lists that I don't really care about come before the others.......... :) ......anyway, notice the way Nestle puts it: attached is the allergen information you requested......ALLERGEN! It's not an allergy! Anyway:

Dear Nestl

celiac3270 Collaborator

I got another reply, this one from Dannon. I think it's funny that they mention celiac.com. Anyway, it's pretty much just the plain ones, though for any dieting celiacs, the lowfat and nonfat are gluten-free.......often, lowfat and nonfat products contain gluten, so that's good news.......although I'm trying to gain weight.

August 24, 2004

Thank you for contacting The Dannon Company, Inc. We sincerely appreciate

your

interest in Dannon yogurt products and gluten.

Dannon yogurt products are characterized as either gluten safe or not gluten

safe. Our

Dannon Plain Lowfat, Plain Nonfat and Plain Natural are all gluten safe.

All other

Dannon yogurts cannot be designated as gluten safe because the natural

flavor systems

used might have ingredients added to stabilize the flavor. The stabilizing

ingredients may

be derived from gluten sources.

For our valued consumers that may have allergenic risks associated with

gluten, our

products are not specifically formulated to contain gluten but we cannot

guarantee that

the alcohol portion of the natural flavor system is always derived from corn

and not from

wheat, oats, rye and barley.

We hope this information is helpful to you. As an additional resource, you

may wish to

visit the website: www.celiac.com. Once again, thank you for contacting

Dannon.

Product formulations are different in other countries, so be careful if you are not in the US. (Karen, I know you are aware of this from delphi but thought I'd mention it for others.)

Publix brand sherbets and yogurts are gluten-free - confirmed recently.

Good point, crc0622.

I have another list :) ......this one from Haagen-Dazs

Thank you for your email requesting nutritional information on Hagen-Dazs

products. In an

increasingly health-conscious society, we are always happy to answer your

questions about our

products.

As a general rule, the gluten in any of our ice cream, frozen yogurt or

novelty products is present

only in added bakery products such as cookies or shortcake. In most cases

the ice cream itself

contains no gluten. Gluten is never hidden under the term "natural

flavors".

We have sent a current flavor list, upon which any flavor that contains

gluten is so designated

with the letter "G". We hope that this information will be helpful to you.

Please feel free to call

our toll-free number should you need any further information. Our

representatives will be happy

to help you.

We value our consumers and hope you will continue to enjoy our products.

Please watch for our

follow-up response to arrive shortly, along with a flavor list and recipes.

celiac3270, It sounds like you have learned that you are not lactose intolerant. If you don't know for sure, it would seem better to avoid ice cream altogether, especially since you are still having problems. I really shouldn't be giving advice about milk products since I had company last week and made them a traditional family treat, strawberry shortcake (biscuit from regular flour) and topped with whipping cream, 1 pt. between 6 people. I ate my share and after being gluten free for just 3 weeks had several other glaring departures from my diet. The first days of this week my burning abdomen was much worse and also my arthritis. Today I am feeling a bit better. At least I learned that I do feel some better in general when I am on the diet. Of course, I still have not been on very long. Will see my doctor on Monday. He wants to monitor my progress. Too bad I slipped. He also wants to be sure I don't lose too much weight. I gained a little with the company, but have already lost that. Have trouble getting enough calories to replace the bread and pasta stuff I was eating. I really am not into baking alot so haven't bought any gluten-free baking ingredients. I am on the strict SCD diet set forth in "Breaking the Vicious Cycle". This is not as hard for me as it would be for you since I really don't need to gain weight, just try to hold steady. Also I have been in the habit of eating mostly meat and vegetables, a few fruits for some time except for bread and desserts at Ladies' Guild. I did manage not to eat cake at Guild this time. Back to baking ingredients, the gluten-free nutflours, etc. seem very expensive. I think you mentioned this, too, awhile back. If you run into any good lists for this sort of thing I'd be interested. Ruth

celiac3270 Collaborator

Ruth,

I simply e-mailed all these companies cause I had a lot of time on my hands with a computer and nothing else to do :D . I tried to think of a lot of companies that I could e-mail. I do not eat Ben and Jerry's ice cream, although I have had Haagen Dazs. The doctor is focusing on a few things that he thinks could be causing my problems. Actually, I should probably be a little more strict or observant with dairy consumption and symptoms.

Actually, I've heard a bit more from my doctor, so I'll fill everybody in. Okay, first off, as you all know by now, I've still been having symptom troubles.....and my GI was terrific in diagnosing, but utterly useless with the post-diagnosis stage of celiac. So I recently switched doctors to a celiac specialist. He has been great. Now, these were a few possibilities:

- Cyclic Vomiting: a migraine-related thing that manifests itself in vomiting--I'm not sure about the abdominal pains. One thing that makes him think that is that my pediatrician thought I had that when I had stomach troubles...he might have been right...additionally, I used to; not so much anymore, see spots, kinda, when I was sick -- as sign of cyclic. Anyway, if this is the case, there's nothing to do about it, but wait. You're supposed to outgrow it and if I had it, I should be outgrowing it already.

- Gallbladder: Karen mentioned the possiblity of something with my gallbladder. I mentioned that to him and he said that that would be quite a possibility. Then he asked if I had had a sonogram, which I had, and therefore, he said, it would've already been found.

- Ulcers: Just something I saw written all over, so I brought that up. He said that that is a possibility.....I don't know how you test that or how you treat it, so if someone could fill me in on that, it would be appreciated.

.........I don't remember everything, but I guess I just haven't been paying attention to the dairy since my focus is on acid and sugar. I think cutting out the ACID has helped tremendously....I just feel better than I did...I don't know if this is just in my head. BTW, I am to continue taking Prilosec OTC twice a day. That about brings us up to date :) . If my symptoms don't get better after....maybe a year, perhaps sooner, I think I'll start an elimination diet.....start off with veggies, meats, potato.....see how it goes.....then slowly incorporate a few items each week and if it gets bad, target individual items..............at this point I don't want to limit myself more than I have to.....if I lose my patience I'll try that.

Well, celiac3270, I'll help you out a little here. I emailed Carvel today, asking specifically which of their flavors are gluten-free and if you can special order their cakes w/o the chocolate "crunchies" in the center as those contain wheat. Here's what they said:

Thank you for your email. Most of our ice cream is gluten-free, except for those that contain brownie or cookie dough. You can only special order a cake through one of Carvel retail stores. Hey I wrote Old El paso and this is what they told me

Dear Ms. Allen:

Thank you for contacting Old El Paso regarding gluten in Old El Paso products.

It is our primary goal to help our consumers determine whether or not they can include our products in their diet. To accurately accomplish this, we believe it is best to refer to the specific ingredients listed on each product package.

However, we do understand that ingredients can be confusing, so we want to assure you if the ingredient label does not list wheat, barley, rye, oats or other sources of gluten, then the product would be gluten-free. Sources of gluten are listed on the label even if the source of gluten is part of another ingredient (such as flavoring or spice). Because ingredients may vary from one package to another due to product reformulation, you should use the product

Oooh........i got e-mails from General Mills, Yoplait, and.........some other places........can't remember who........yesterday. I got the same thing from General Mills, but I wasn't asking about a specific product or type of product. Can't remember the other replies.........just remember that Yoplait has no list..... <_< I'll check when I get home

lyndszai Apprentice

hey celiac3270 can u post the Mars (milky ways, M&Ms, etc.) list .Thanks

lovegrov Collaborator

General Mills doesn't hide gluten. All Yoplait flavors are gluten-free, but they do have some that comes with a separate package of granola. Don't use the granola.

richard

celiac3270 Collaborator

oooh.......really Richard? I read in some sample of Clan Thompson's that the custard-style was gluten-free.........i didn't see anything else, but it never said that other flavors weren't gluten-free........thanks.

Lyndsey,

I couldn't contact the entire company Mars via e-mail, but rather, just Milkyway or M&Ms separately on their respective sites. M&Ms are gluten-free (peanut, regular, etc.), except for the crispy kind (blue packaging). Milkyways are not gluten-free except for the Milky Way midnight. I don't have the official lists w/ me......I'm not posting from home and aol.com doesn't always let me into my mailbox due to # of messages..............annoying. Anyway, when I get home, I'll post it.

Hi again. celiac3270, if you ever do go on an elimination diet, perhaps consider eliminating potatoes and tomato family also. Peppers and eggplant are also in that family. Those are things that definitely give me problems, but they may not bother you since all our systems are different. Like snowflakes, each person is different. Just thought I'd mention that possibility. Know that would be hard to do. I miss them very much, but as I've said in a different post, I am using the Elaine Gott(?) SCD diet. Intend to follow through even if I get company again since this past week has been rough. I think it is starting to come around again. Ruth

Hmmmmmmm......interesting........I eat TONS of potatoes.

I have osteopenia and have cracked three vertebrae.  Niacin is connected to osteoporosis! Do talk to your nutritionist and doctor about supplementing with B vitamins.  Blood tests don't reveal the amount of vitamins stored inside cells.  The blood is a transportation system and can reflect vitamins absorbed from food eaten in the previous twenty-four to forty-eight hours.  Those "normal limits" are based on minimum amounts required to prevent disease, not levels for optimal health.   Keep us posted on your progress.   B Vitamins: Functions and Uses in Medicine https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9662251/ Association of dietary niacin intake with osteoporosis in the postmenopausal women in the US: NHANES 2007–2018 https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11835798/ Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/   Nutritional Imbalances in Adult Celiac Patients Following a Gluten-Free Diet https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8398893/ Nutritional Consequences of Celiac Disease and Gluten-Free Diet https://www.mdpi.com/2036-7422/15/4/61 Simplifying the B Complex: How Vitamins B6 and B9 Modulate One Carbon Metabolism in Cancer and Beyond https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9609401/

Thank you so much for the clarification! Yes to these questions: Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, or vitamins? I’m within healthy range for nutritional tests, thyroid and am not anemic. I do have osteopenia. I don’t take any medications, and the dietician was actually a nutritionist (not sure if that is the same thing) recommended by my physician at the time to better understand gluten free eating.    I almost wish the gluten exposure had triggered something, so at least I’d know what’s going on. So confusing!    Many thanks!
    • knitty kitty
@JudyLou,  I have dermatitis herpetiformis, too!  And...big drum roll... Niacin improves dermatitis herpetiformis!   Niacin is very important to skin health and intestinal health.   You're correct.  dermatitis herpetiformis usually occurs on extensor muscles, but dermatitis herpetiformis is also pressure sensitive, so blisters can form where clothing puts pressure on the skin. Elastic waist bands, bulky seams on clothing, watch bands, hats.  Rolled up sleeves or my purse hanging on my arm would make me break out on the insides of my elbows.  I have had a blister on my finger where my pen rested as I write.  Foods high in Iodine can cause an outbreak and exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis. You've been on the gluten free diet for a long time.  Our gluten free diet can be low in vitamins and minerals, especially if processed gluten free foods are consumed.  Those aren't fortified with vitamins like gluten containing products are.  Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, medicine, or vitamins? Niacin deficiency is connected to anemia.  Anemia can cause false negatives on tTg IgA tests.  A person can be on that borderline where symptoms wax and wane for years, surviving, but not thriving.  We have a higher metabolic need for more nutrients when we're sick or emotionally stressed which can deplete the small amount of vitamins we can store in our bodies and symptoms reappear.   Exposure to gluten (and casein in those sensitive to it) can cause an increased immune response and inflammation for months afterwards. The immune cells that make tTg IgA antibodies which are triggered today are going to live for about two years. During that time, inflammation is heightened.  Those immune cells only replicate when triggered.  If those immune cells don't get triggered again for about two years, they die without leaving any descendents programmed to trigger on gluten and casein.  The immune system forgets gluten and casein need to be attacked.  The Celiac genes turn off.  This is remission.    Some people in remission report being able to consume gluten again without consequence.   However, another triggering event can turn the Celiac genes on again.   Celiac genes are turned on by a triggering event (physical or emotional stress).  There's some evidence that thiamine insufficiency contributes to the turning on of autoimmune genes.  There is an increased biological need for thiamine when we are physically or emotionally stressed.  Thiamine cannot be stored for more than twenty-one days and may be depleted in as little as three during physical and emotional stresses. Mitochondria without sufficient thiamine become damaged and don't function properly.  This gets relayed to the genes and autoimmune disease genes turn on.  Thiamine and other B vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are needed to replace the dysfunctional mitochondria and repair the damage to the body.   I recommend getting checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  More than just Vitamin D and B12.  A gluten challenge would definitely be a stressor capable of precipitating further vitamin deficiencies and health consequences.   Best wishes!

And I agree with Wheatwacked. When a physician tells you that you can't have celiac disease because you're not losing weight, you can be certain that doctor is operating on a dated understanding of celiac disease. I assume you are in the UK by the way you spelled "coeliac". So, I'm not sure what your options are when it comes to healthcare, but I might suggest you look for another physician who is more up to date in this area and is willing to work with you to get an accurate diagnosis. If, in fact, you do not have celiac disease but you know that gluten causes you problems, you might have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). There is no test available yet for NCGS. Celiac must first be ruled out. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that damages the lining of the small bowel. NCGS we is not autoimmune and we know less about it's true nature. But we do know it is considerably more common than celiac disease.
