Specific Carbohydrate Diet (modified)

First, let me apologize if this topic/diet has already been covered on the board. I have the feeling that it was mentioned on here somewhere, but for some reason my search isn't yielding any results. I guess my main question is: has anyone tried this? And if so, did it help or hurt or have no result for you?

I have Celiac but have only improved marginally being on the gluten-free diet. <_< I seem to react to ANY starch, even if it is organic, prepared by me and not even related to grains (potato, beans, peas, etc).

I'm seriously considering a modified version of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet -- by modified I mean even more restrictive, haha  . So I'm leaning toward a strict regimen of fish and non-starchy veggies...along with vitamins and reading the SCD bible "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" for support. I recently talked to a woman in my extended family who was very sick for years but healed herself by doing something similar.

Any thoughts or advice? Thanks so much for your input!! :)

Cali,

Is it possible that your lyme is acting up again?

I'm sorry but I don't know about the SCD diet.

I tried it. I did a very very modified SCD diet for about 2 weeks. I was all gung-ho about it. I got the book and read alot on her website but I actually did worse on the diet. I was reacting to the foods that I was trying to start out with. I never made it past the "intro".....so basically I gave up. :(

I remember one person here who always praised the diet and she always felt great while on it....but I dont think she had all the food intolerances to deal with either. Its harder when alot of foods cause reactions. It might be easier for you if its only starches that bother you because most starches arent allowed on the diet anyway.

Good luck :)

As of Jan. 3, I have been on the specific carbohydrate diet for 1 year. I have collagenous colitis not celiac (but it is related to celiac and is often treated with a gluten free diet). A gluten free diet helped some, but I still had daily D. After 3 months on the SCD, I have had no symptoms (except from mistakes or cross-contamination from eating out).

I cannot tolerate dairy, acidic foods ie tomatoes and oranges, high fiber foods ie spinach and broccoli, nuts or any beans so I have modified the diet. I take a calcium supplement because of no dairy. I need to plan ahead to make sure I get enough calories (I'm an avid runner and skier). For proteins, I eat fish, meat and eggs (can tolerate those). For carbs I eat well-cooked carrots, squash, bananas and canned fruit. I also eat lots of avocado to increase the calories. The diet is a bit boring, but it's worth it to feel good. PM me if you have questions.

Hi girls,

Thanks for responding so quickly! It makes me feel so much more sane  to have other people to bounce ideas off of.

I don't think it's the Lyme acting up again, because the worsening symptoms are definitely related to what I eat...

I can't tolerate a lot of what's on the SCD but I'm thinking that trying a very modified version of it might be worth a shot.

Thanks again for all of your input :)

I have been trying the SCD diet for the last month and it has started to help out with my gut (I had more stomach issues then just gluten) It seems to be a healing diet for your body. It is much more limited of a diet then just gluten free so if you have a lot of other food allergies in addition to eating SCD it might be difficult to get adequate nutrition.

Do you know of or do you have a copy of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing?"

In there there is a "detox" section which includes a 7 day detox menu. There is one full day of fasting. I've done this before and really cleane dout my system (okay, I don't do all the gross enemas and stuff they recommended, just the food).

I've felt better after I've done it.

Once you've "cleaned house" you could see if you can reintro slowly?

:( good luck!

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.

Hi Colleen H,   I suffered with the pins and needles/burning feeling in my legs and feet for at least  6 years until my Nephrologist figured out that I had to go on a low salt diet.  He said my kidneys weren't strong enough to remove the salt.  The simple fix was a diuretic, but that med leaves the uric acid behind, so that wasn't an option.  On the bright side the low salt diet lowered my BP over 20 points and and the pins and needles/burning feeling went away.  Good Luck and hope this helps.
