I went shopping yesterday in Shoprite. I found soooooo much stuff that is gluten free. The Passover stuff is being put out, I am not sure when Passover is, but the food is going out. There are items that say gluten free right on the box. Last nite I made Liebers Scalloped Potatoes from a BOX!! I usually make them by hand and yest I love them my way, but to be able to open up a box and add water and butter and bake.. wowie! They tasted pretty darn good too. (not better than my own of course :P ) I bought a few cake mixes, onion soup mix by Osem which says gluten free right on the container, Gefen puts out all kinds of pasta.. elbows, shells, zitis. I of course, got the egg noodles too! I was a mad woman in there!! It was great. The rabbi had a blast going thru all the stuff with me.. hehehehe, he was so happy to help me and to explain some of the religious stuff behind all kosher and glatt kosher to me. I had a great time! what an outing... to the grocery store!

Hooray for Passover!

Just be careful, as not all Kosher-for-Passover things are gluten-free. If it contains matzo meal, matzo flour, ground matzo, or matzo starch (and sometimes it's spelled, "matzah"), it still comes from wheat!

Enjoy!

Also, if you don't have an Asian store nearby (Asian stores are great places to stock up cheaply on rice flour, tapioca starch, and potato starch), this is the time to stock up on potato starch. The Manischevitz brand is what you usually see in the Passover section, and it's much cheaper than Bob's Red Mill.

I only bought the items that specifically said gluten free on the boxes. And of course, double checked the ingredients. I tried the scalloped potatoes and they were good... I havent tried any of the cake mixes and they come with a frosting pack right in the box. Again the box says gluten free and I double checked the ingredients. Alot of Kosher items do contain matzo meal in some form, so we have to be careful, but remember egg noodles are gluten free!!!! Manshieviwitz (sp) brand. YAY

Guhlia Rising Star

Not all Manshiewitz egg noodles are gluten free, only the passover noodles are according to their website. If only my Wal-mart would start stocking their shelves for passover... They really have gluten free cake mixes??? At a normal grocery store??? That would be so wonderful!

Wow, I never even thought to check the label of the egg noodles! What starch do they use? Potato?

TinkerbellSwt Collaborator

Yes, they are the manishevitz (sp?) gold premium ONLY! They are specifically for Passover only. And yes cake mixes with the frosting packs right in the box, and gluten free is written boldly in yellow on the box!! I bought a crispy chicken coating, which again speificallly states gluten free.. and a honey glaze chicken, cheaper than the one bbq one we can have from shake n bake. The egg noodles do use potato instead of wheat, but its only this time of year. Gefen makes all kinds of noodles, shells, elbows, etc.. I bought a few of them they are a lot cheaper than Tinkyada, probably not nearly as good, but I will take ok too! The store I shopped in was a ShopRite, the one in Mercer, out by Princeton in New Jersey..

This is what Maneschewitz has on their site as being gluten-free. So enjoy!

I discovered last month that Vons stocks some gluten free items. There is this little section of the baking aisle in our local Vons with gluten free cake and muffin mixes and flours and things like Almond Milk. They also stock a couple of the special gluten-free cereal brands in their cereal aisle. When I saw the little section in the baking aisle though I started to cry. I don't as a rule shop there becasue they're prices are so much higher, but I now shop there once every couple weeks for the special stuff.

I also found a sweet potato pancake mix in the international aisle with the passover foods that is gluten free and not bad tasting. It makes a nice side dish at dinner :)

Isn't it amazing how just finding something you can eat in a grocery store brightens your whole day?

Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
