My 9 yr old son has just been diagnosed,( blood and saliva tests only). We've been wheat free for i month and also gluten free for 1 week. He's been having horrible nightmares and really bad headaches

for the last 4 days. Is it possible his body is detoxing? Also a red scaly rash on the backs of his arms and elbows seem to have appearred. Any ideas/advice anyone. This is so new new to us and a little scary. Please help.

Since you're only about a week into the gluten-free diet, it does sound like detoxing could be the culprit. Maybe his body is reacting to the gluten that may still be in his system (?). It also could be some hidden gluten getting in. Sometimes right after you go gluten-free, people get ultra sensitive really quickly. It takes a while to learn all the details of the diet, so that may be part of what's going on.

Just keep coming here, read the archives and ask questions whenever you need to. This is the best place to learn about the gluten-free diet and get product reviews and recipes too.

I get nightmares, migraines and insomnia from gluten, so I can really identify with him. Not fun at all.

Hmm well this dont really answer ur question, but I can tell u I get a lot of horrible nightmares since going gluten-free, and if I get glutened(like when i had to eat regular food), i had a nightmare worse than ever. They were never this bad before Celiac. and I also get headaches a lot more frequently. Again, dont answer ur question..sorry :P

I hope he feels better soooonnnn. give him a hug for me.

Whenever someone mentions migraines, I think of MSG. It seems to be a major factor for many - gluten intolerant or not. But I suppose the more permeable gut might contribute to some degree. It isn't a given though, just a possibility.

As for the rash, it sounds like DH (Open Original Shared Link). I'd recommend looking at some posts (follow the link) and see if there's a correlation.

And of course hang in there. You've made the important step in going gluten-free. Now for the recovery phase. It can be rough, as many here can attest, but well worth the effort!!

Your response on this matter is what I expect. You’ve had a similar episode years ago, but this one is lasting longer!

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.
