We are traveling to Kauai, Hawaii this summer and are invited to a luau for a wedding reception. Does anyone know what is safe there? Also any restaurant help would be appreciated.

There will probably be lots of pig and fruit at the luau :) I doubt you would have much of a problem there. I'm not sure about restaurants though.

[im going to the Old Lahaina Luau in a few weeks. I made a note in our reservation that I needed gluten-free food (eventhough it's a buffet). They called me back the same day and said that they would offer me 2 choices, beef tenderloin or chicken, then would give me a list of ingredients for all of the foods in the buffet so I could see what is in them and choose for myself.

Maybe where you are going will do the same?

Yep. Just contact the place doing it and they will almost certainly take care of you. If they can't guarantee the safety of the luau food, they should be able to provide you with a safe plate of food so you can eat with everyone else. My understanding is that most of the companies that do luaus also do general catering, so it shouldn't be a problem for them to do that for you.

Let us know how it goes.

I’ve used tinctures and made my own edibles with gluten-free ingredients to stay safe. Dispensary staff don’t always know about gluten, so I double-check labels or just make my own.

It's great to hear that there are some good doctors out there, and this is an example of why having a formal diagnosis can definitely be helpful.

Update: I have a wonderful new gastroenterologist. She wants to be sure there’s nothing more serious, like refractory celiac, going on. She ordered various tests including some micronutrient tests that no one has ever ordered before.  I’m deficient in folate and zinc and starting supplements for both. I’m so glad I decided to go to a new GI!

Autoimmune diseases tend to cluster. Many of them are found close together on the chromosomes.

Just giving another update... I was referred to rheumatology, and they suspect that I may also be dealing with fibromyalgia (it has not been formally diagnosed, but just suggested at this point).  So, I am continuing with the anti-inflammatory diet and vitamins and still working to keep getting rid of all these hidden gluten sources, but I also do have another possible explanation for some of the issues that I'm dealing with.
