Feeling Like Burden

BUGTWIG

BUGTWIG Rookie

I have been dealing with being gluten free. A frustrating Process as you all know. I have a great family but it seems like all of our favorites are flying out the window and I feel so bad. I have them still have them and I make something else for me.

There are just so many times I just want to cry because of all the changes. and there are many times I have.

I just want to eat and not worry what is in it. The other day I did just that convinced myself I could eat it . Well I paid over and over.

I then hate that feeling even more.

This is what I am focusing on If i eat that I will feel so bad it isn't worth it.

I am also having a hard time with not being able to get back to work or have the energy to take care of the kids all day yet.

I love my job and haven't been back this year. I miss it I feel like part of me is gone. I also having to depend so much on others to do things for me. But I am just so low energy I sleep all the time. and I feel sick alot. I am doctoring a lot right now tests to rule other things out. As of now I am diagnosed gluten intolerant. I don't want to do the biopsy. They said I would have to start eating the food to have the test be accurate I just don't want to do that esp after the other day.

I feel I am in the land of lost

Jyn

Jyn, I am sorry you still feel so bad. Have you been tested for adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism? Both are very common with celiac disease, and especially adrenal fatigue can be directly caused by it.

I know how you feel, though. I never had much energy as a kid already, but after having kids my energy was just gone. I have been made to feel like a burden, and being told it was all in my head and I was just lazy for pretty much all of my marriage of 28 years.

For me it is a very long haul of getting better, and I don't know if I will ever actually be well. But with the gluten-free diet and taking adrenal and thyroid meds, I am slowly, slowly able to do a little more every week or so.

Are you still eating/drinking dairy products? You may want to eliminate those for now if you haven't already, it could make a difference. And remember, it takes time to recover. It took years to get as sick as you are, and you won't be healed instantly either.

It isn't your fault you are sick, you didn't choose to have celiac disease.

Have you had all your levels of essential nutrients checked? Being low in key vitamins and minerals could keep you feeling bad, too. Especially iron, vitamin D, B vitamins and magnesium are essential for energy.

Also, you don't have the energy to cook more than one meal. Your family will be fine eating gluten-free, especially because you can get gluten-free substitutes for almost everything. If you don't use more energy than you have, you will recover much quicker. Plus the risk of cross-contamination will be lowered tremendously if you don't have gluten foods in the house.

Hi Jyn, hang in there - it gets easier over time.

Right now you still have to be aware and pay attention, but after a while more things become automatic and don't take as much energy.

Try to adopt some family favorites to gluten-free so you don't feel the need to make two meals.

My Mom (who raised 7 kids) used to have "catch as catch can" meal nights where you could eat anything you wanted, as long as you made it.

I don't know what your job is, but is there some literature you can read now and then to kind of keep you fresh and feel less like you're missing something you love?

And finally whine, whine whine. This is the place to do it, and everyone here understands some part of what you're going through. Sometimes just saying what's bothering you seems to help you get through it.

I know what you mean. When I get glutened I have severe gut cramps and throw up for 2-3 hr. and then have diarrhea for another several hours. Avoid eating out if at all possible. It is the number one source of gluten contamination for us celiacs. When you are forced to eat out at a new restaurant that you are not sure is safe, try to order things that you can be sure will not get cross contaminated like a boiled egg, baked potatos, steamed vegies, fresh fruit. Yes, I know that doesn't sound as appetizing as pizza or a burger and fries but your health is at stake. I also realize that as a 14 year old you don't have a lot of control over where you eat out because you are tagging along with others or adults are paying for it. Do you have support from your parents concerning your need to eat gluten free? Do you believe they have a good understanding of the many places gluten can show up in the food supply?

Okay went online to check green mountain k cups .It was said that the regular coffees are fine but they couldn’t guarantee cross contamination.with the flavors. im trying to figure out since I eliminated the suyrup so far so good. I’m hoping. thanks it feels good to listen to other people there views.

Thank you I will i have been on a strict gluten free diet ever since I got diagnosed but sometimes places lie about there food so there r some things that do get contaminated which causes me to throw up on end for several hours until I can't hold myself up anymore

Welcome to celiac.com, @Teaganwhowantsanexpltion! Joint pain is a well-established symptom of celiac disease. But joint pain may also be caused by other medical problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc. Make sure you share these concerns with your physician so that he or she can initiate testing or make referrals to specialists. As someone with celiac disease it is very important that you be consistent with the gluten free diet.
