Irregular Periods

Hi,

Maybe someone can help. I just went off birth control three months ago. Before going on birth control my periods were extremely irregular. (6 weeks, then 2 weeks, then 3 weeks then 5 weeks etc) I was diagnosed with Celiac 6 months ago and have been gluten-free ever since. I had read that Celiac can lead to irregular periods so I was hoping that since I am gluten-free now that my periods would be normal but no such luck. It took me six weeks to get my first period after going off birth control. My next period came after 5 weeks. My husband and I want to start trying but since I am still irregular I think it will be difficult to tell when I get pregnant since I really never know when my period is coming. Will the periods become regular over time since I am off gluten or is it possible that my periods will never be regular and it's not the Celiac at all.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi there

Pick up "taking charge of your fertility" I believe the author is Toni Weschler. This will help you figure out your cycles.

Hi Angel,

I have had the same thing. I actually just went to the doctor because mine were so out of control random, and she tested my thyroid to make sure there wasn't something wrong there, and there wasn't - but maybe this is your issue. Also, she said that it could take an entire year after going off the pill to get back to normal, and many months to get pregnant (makes me scared!). So this may not help, but I was hoping mine would get to normal after going gluten-free and they haven't.

Hope that helps!

I went off my birth control about 6 months before starting the gluten-free diet. Those months in between were awful. I had my period for 1 to 2 months straight with only about 1 week of non-period. I've read and loved Takin Charge Of Your Fertility, and wanted to be in control and aware of my body. The problem persisted so long I eventually gave in and went to the doctor. I expressed my concern about wanting to avoid birth control pills, but I knew I needed some help to get things under control. She started me on Provera, which I take 10 days out of the month. I don't have the same side effects as I did with bc pills, and my periods are regular. I've been gluten-free for about a year now, so this month I'm skipping my Provera to see if my body is ovulating or not. I still chart my temps every morning, so I should be able to tell if it happens. Here's hoping!

-not trying to get pregnant, just want to know that i'm functioning for when dh and I begin to try

I am in the same boat you are! I went off the pill 4 months ago and am very irregular. I fluctuate between 4, 5, and 6 weeks. My husband and I are also trying to get pregnant but it is hard b/c I have no idea when I am ovulating. I was very irregular before I went on the pill so I didn't really expect to have normal cycles now that I am off it. I have been gluten free for almost four years now, so for me, it isn't celiac that is causing the irregular cycles. I have read that it is possibly "ovulation issues"...I don't really know what that means. My husband just keeps telling me that it is not an easy process getting pregnant, it takes some people a long time, we just need to keep trying and be patient. It makes an emotional time that much more emotional. I wish I had some advice for you but I don't, I just wanted to let you know that you aren't the only one out there. Best of luck to you and your husband!

Hey, I'm new to this forum thing but I like what I've read so far. Lots of good advice and experience. I don't know if anyone can help but, my issue is that I've started spotting but I'm on a progesterone shot which had already stopped my periods for over a year. I have been on a gluten-free diet for almost a month and a half and I've spotted twice in that time frame. Is anyone else on a birth control shot with similar results?

I didn't think a changed diet could affect my cycle while I'm on birth control.

Hi Girls- I have irregular cycles also. Typically 32-45 days long and anywhere in between. I was dx'ed with PCOS. My doc. suggested Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor two months ago, last month was the first month we used it and i'm pregnant :D you use it every morning and it tells you the days of high fertility and then when you ovulate. it was $200 on Amazon but so worth it. we'd been trying for over a year then I had a miscarriage in January (so I'm crossing my fingers we hear a heartbeat at tomorrows doctors appointment). I don't work for the company or anything but the product totally works and it was very simple to use!

Oh my gosh I never thought that this could be a celiac thing! I have NEVER been regular!!! It was always a guessing game with my bf and I and always always always had a tampon stash on me....but funny, whenever I forgot the tampon stash was when i got my period....i think my body was playing tricks on me on purpose! lol Good to know i'm not the only one!

My period took about 9 months to come back after being gluten free. My sister's took about a year.

I second the book "taking charge of your fertility". Its a very good read and very thorough. It helps to understand how your body works, it also talks about infertility and how to avoid pregnancy in the future.

so do you have celiac or not? 🤔 why are your vision issues undiagnosed? 😢 what does your ophthalmologist say?  do you have a serious vit A deficiency? what do you take for it? how long have you had celiac disease and how long did  it take to get a diagnosis?   if you are legally blind there are adaptive devices that will help you. I have vision difficulties as well but did not qualify (at least not yet)   do you have a vit A deficiency? why are you undiagnosed? what does your ophthalmologist say? I have a retinal specialist and he tells me my eye condition can not be fixed- until/unless it gets to the point of where surgery is safer since the surgery can leave me actually blind... so you want to wait til it gets really bad 🤪     I hope you find what works for you.    PS   the medication I started at the same time as the gluten challenge is obvious from the condition it's trying to treat. you can google it 😉 it is not an for any auto immune condition.

@catnapt,  I apologize.  Obviously I've confused you with someone else.  I have vision problems due to undiagnosed Celiac complications.  Being legally blind, y'all look the same from here.   You still have not said which new medication you started taking.  Parathyroid disorders can affect antibody production.  Bone Loss Correlated with Parathyroid Hormone Levels in Adult Celiac Patients https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36619734/ Effect of vitamin B1 supplementation on bone turnover markers in adults: an exploratory single-arm pilot study https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12075007/

during the gluten challenge I did not consume any wheat germ   the wheat germ is TOASTED - it's the only way it is sold now afiak doesn't matter I consume vast amounts of lectin containing foods PROPERLY prepared and have for well over a decade. They do not bother me in the least.    no anemia however the endo who ordered the celiac panel is the one who suggested the 2 week gluten challenge of eating at least 2 slices of bread per day or a serving of pasta- ALSO put me on a new drug at the same time (not a good idea)  I ate 4 slices because they were thin, or 2 English muffins, and just once some lasagna that someone else made since I stopped eating wheat pasta years ago. The English muffins caused some of the worst symptoms but that pc of lasagna almost killed me ( not literally but the pain was extreme) during those 12 days there were at least 3 times I considered going to Urgent Care.   This entire process was a waste of time TBH due to being on that new drug at the exact same time. it is impossible to tell if the drug I am taking for the possible renal calcium leak is working or not- given the dramatic response to the gluten challenge and resulting nausea (no vomiting) and eventually a loss of appetite and lower intake of foods so now I have a dangerously low potassium level   I don't have a simple case of celiac or no- I have an extremely complicated case with multiple variables I am seeing an endocrinologist for a problem with the calcium sensing glands - that system is very complicated and she has been unable to give me a firm diagnosis after many tests with confusing and often alarming results. She also appears to be inexperienced and unsure of herself. but I don't have the luxury of finding a new endo due to multiple issues of insurance, lack of drs in my area, money and transportation. so I'm stuck with her At least she hasn't given up    in any case I can assure you that lectins are not and never were the problem. I know they are a favorite villain in some circles to point to, but I have ZERO symptoms from my NORMAL diet which DOES NOT contain gluten. The longer I went without bread or foods with wheat like raisin bran cereal, the better I have felt. my body had been telling me for several years that wheat was the problem- or maybe specifically gluten, that remains to be seen- and stopping eating it was the best thing I could have done   I almost had unnecessary MAJOR SURGERY due to joint pain that I ONLY have if I am eating bread or related products I assumed it was the refined grains - never really suspected gluten but it does not matter I won't put that poison in my body ever again not that it is literally poison but it is def toxic to me

@catnapt,  I'm sorry you're having such a rough time.   How much wheat germ and how much gluten were you eating? Lectins in beans can be broken down by pressure cooking them.  Do you pressure cook your beans?  Were you pressure cooking your wheat germ? What drugs are you taking?  Some immunosuppressive drugs affect IgA production.  Do you have anemia?

oops my gluten challenge was only 12 days It started Jan 21s and ended Feb 1st   worst 12 days of my life   Does not help that I also started on a thiazide-like drug for rule in/out renal calcium leak at the exact same time No clue if that could have been symptoms worse 🤔
