My celiac naturopath says most people with untreated celiac disease or other food allergies have problems with stomach digestion because the intestines can't adequately process food. So stomach digestion is impaired. I threw up during the night a lot as a small child. My mom said I had 'stomach flu' but nobody else in our house got that like I did. I also felt uncomfortably full after eating only 'normal' amounts of food. Finally after being diagnosed with celiac disease and 4 food allergies, I abstained from gluten and then my 4 other allergy source foods. That improved digestion a little.

However I had also been treated for reflux about 20 years ago. Rather than determine the source of my indigestion (which was due to celiac disease damage), doctors prescribed antiacids and acid blockers. Those impaired my stomach's ability to produce its own HCl. So I recently started taking digestive enzymes with HCl. That really helped my digestion more than anything else. I don't hurt or have gas and bloating after every meal now.

I recommend you see a naturopath or gastro doc who deals with celiac disease and food allergies. Other docs may just give you drugs to treat the symptoms without treating the cause of impaired digestion.

It is thought that I have gastroparesis based on my symptoms. They could not do the test for me because it involves eating eggs and I'm severely allergic. Supposedly the test can also be done with oatmeal but apparently the hospital I went to doesn't know how to do it. I do not have celiac but I do have food allergies and diabetes. As a child, I too was sick to my stomach a lot! I am wondering now if I didn't have it back then too. I also wonder how much of a factor the food allergies might be. If you're eating the same thing day after day like I was and then becoming adjusted to feelings of constant sickness, that's got to take a toll on the body, gluten or no gluten!

Hi, I've got gastroparesis. I found out when I was seriously sick before getting the Celiac diagnosis. They took out my gallbladder, which wasn't working anyway, in hopes that it would help the gastroparesis. It did not. So avoid that path if you can, until you try other methods. Gastroparesis is something you have for life that gets better and worse over time, stress does not help. I've got plenty of stress

There are sites about the disease, so go look it up. Some good books too. Basically the test is eating radioactive eggs in the nuclear medicine lab at the hospital and then they take pictures to see when and how the eggs are diegested. Mine barely moved in an hour. The problem is the stomach fails to empty correctly. Some foods are harder to eat than others, but I don't pay attention to it.

The fun part is there are only a few medicines for it. I was put on liquid Reglan. The longer you take the medicine, the less effective it becomes. hmmm. My doctor actually told me the medicine that i needed to order from Canada when the reglan stopped working. I loved my doctor, but I did not like that news.

eventually I went to an herbalist. She prescribed a basic maintenance system of vitamins and herbs. It worked well. One helpful item was a Food Enzyme, another a Digestive Enzyme along with regular vitamins and things. The food enzyme and digestive enzyme are the best. Whenever I feel my stomach acting up I start taking the enzymes again and I feel great. I have not taken the Reglan in years now! Yes I am a Celiac too.

Hope that helped. Definately look into having the test done. I believe in working with the doctors and ruling out causes of problems. Once you have a diagnosis, find an "alternative medicine" way to supplement and feel better.

What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks

I would not think store bought yogurt would contain gluten unless it possibly could be through an added flavoring or coloring ingredient. Otherwise, it should be naturally gluten free.  Keep in mind that some companies are capitalizing on people's fears and ignorance (nothing personal intended) by labeling foods "gluten free" that are just that way by the nature of what they are. They are hoping to create a marketing edge over their competitors by adding "gluten free" because they know it may catch attention of those new to the celiac/gluten sensitivity experience without having to cost them anything in the way of changing their manufacturing process or doing testing.

I believe the GFCO does use a common logo for certified gluten free products (those containing not more that 10ppm of gluten) but nothing universal yet from the FDA for standard gluten free products (those containing not more that 20ppm).

I have a One Pot and decided to start using it one day. I was hesitant at first making my own yogurt, but was surprised at how easy it was. I like mine better too.

Because I spend so much time reading every word on all food packaging, I personally would greatly appreciate it if there was one common gluten-free symbol written in large-enough text, and always located in the same place. That alone will make shopping easier and faster. I dread having to buy packaged food. Thank you very much for asking,
