Waiting For Dr.

I'll try to make this as simple and quick as possible. My son(age 10) has been having terrible stomach pain and D for months now. Every time we went to the pedi. she would say that he had a virus--a 3 wk straight virus!!???? Well I had had enough and ask to see a specialist. Well, as many of you know, it takes forever to get an appt. In the meantime, his pedi. did blood work and stool samples. He was put on Nulev for pain and D. It has helped, but the pain is still there--he says it is constant pain and it is normal to him now because he has had it for so long. I hate my son to have to go through this. He has missed so much school and I'm ready for some answers.

The GI is calling me back with the actions we will take from the results from the bloodwork that the pedi sent him. I wanted to tell the results here so I can get your opinions on it(results from LabCorp):

tTG IgG <6 Range is 0-5

tTg IgA <4 Range is 0-3

Immunoglobulin A, Serum 183 Range is 53-204

Endomysial Anti. IgA Negative

Antigliadin Abs, IgG 53 Range is 0-9

Antigliadin Abs, IgA 5 Range is 0-4

Also WBC was 15.7 Range: 4.0-13.5

and another high result was

Eos(Absolute) 4.2 Range 0-0.7

Eos 27 Range 0-5

I learned that Eos is related to Asthma and parasites. He doesn't have parasites in his results, but he does have Asthma flare-ups. I don't know if this would be because of his asthma or GI issues.

Any of your opinions are appreciated. I know his pedi GI will give me his opinion and advice; however, I want to be armed with all knowledge when we go to the next appt.

Thank you so much.

These were positive results for celiac. If you plan on putting him through an endo you will need to keep him eating gluten for any chance the endo will come out positive. Many doctors are now realizing how hit and miss the endo is and combining that with the inherent risks of any invasive procedure is leading more to diagnose without it. If you are not going to put him through the endo than you should get him on the diet. With a positive blood panel you should also be sure to test all other family members.

Well, I'm glad someone replied to me because I want to tell you that my pedi. GI called today and said that "NO, he doesn't have Celiac Disease; however, we want to do a Food Allergy Profile" I'm frustrated, but as I read with your stats that you were sent to an allergist, which is where we are heading if these results come back neg and he still has problems. I'm getting to the point that I just want to go gluten-free and forget all of this run around.

Sometimes people have positive biopsies with negative blood work, so the doctor really can't rule out Celiac yet.

You could definitely get Enterolab testing or try an elimination diet. Check for casein intolerance too while you're at it. But you might as well go ahead with the allergy testing too.

A friend of mine is in the bar trade most of his life and has never heard of lines being mixed for different type of beers and ciders. Better to stick with cans.

Thanks very much for confirming my suspicion @Scott Adams! That helps a lot because I'm really trying to track down and get rid of these sources of cross-contact and so I'm going to just rule out the draft ciders and hope that helps. Also @Rogol72 its nice to hear you haven't had a problem on that side of the pond - draft cider lines being used for cider only certainly sounds like the right way to do it, but I think that must not always be practiced over here!

I didn't ask a doctor about this actually. I did ask several doctors a long time ago and they told me gluten has nothing to do with hashimoto's. One of them told me to do a gluten challenge to test for celiac, but at the time I was in graduate school so couldn't afford to be even more ill than I was. If you have the symptoms, I really don't advise you to do a gluten challenge. It messed me up mentally and physically for months. At the same time, I benefitted from doing the challenge in the sense that it convinced me that all my symptoms were truly from gluten - even stuff like insomnia! So now I am terrified to eat gluten, whereas before I would have a little once in a while and not notice anything dramatic.

I am in a similar situation where I can't feasibly do a gluten challenge but have all the symptoms and I have 2 celiac genes. I'm curious if your doctor advised you to eat as if you had a diagnosis or if they were more dismissive about it.

Negative, although I had most of the symptoms of celiac disease. I now eat as if I had a diagnosis.
