Endoscopy On Wednesday

I was supposed to have received forms from the doctor about my endoscopy and what pre-op steps I am supposed to take. Since I know with a colonoscopy, your pre-op starts 3 days out, I wanted to ask here - what pre-op did you have to do for your endoscopy? I don't want to call them Monday and have them say "oh well you were supposed to start doing this stuff yesterday".

Also. Before I have the endoscopy done, what should I talk to the surgeon/nurses about? As in - some have said you should request they take a certain minimum amount of biopsies, etc. Plus I heard that certain vitamin deficiencies should tell the surgeon better where to do the biopsies (like B12 deficiency is usually effected near the illium first). Any more info on that? thanks in advance!

I have had an endoscopy, but it was combined with a colonoscopy at the same time. I'm not sure how much of the colonoscopy protocol is needed if you are just having the endo.

For the double scope, you need to purge your digestive tract. You stop eating solid food and limit yourself to clear fluids for 24 hours, then take a deliberate overdose of laxatives to flush everything out. It is definitely an unpleasant experience. You take nothing at all by mouth for at least eight (8) hours prior to the procedure.

For an endoscopy alone, I would think that the prep is less drastic. There would be no need to purge the colon. Check with the doctor on Monday morning.

The only thing that starts more than 48 hours in advance that I am aware of is that you must stop taking any iron supplements at least 72 hours in advance.

I just had one 3 weeks ago. No food after 10:00 p.m. the day before. Only clear liquids in the morning (water, apple juice gator-aid) , and no liquids at all 3 hours before the endoscopy.

Awesome, thanks. I'll give them a call Monday morning then to double check their specific stuff. My mom has a colonoscopy the following day at the same place (lol) and the pre-op for that was really intense. I just have been waiting for this appt so badly that I didn't want to call on Monday and have them tell me that I screwed up somehow and they were rescheduling the endo. Thanks for the reassurance :)

I don't think you have to take golytlye for the endo!!!! Be happy about that!LOL

I still wouldn't do nuts, seeds, veggies skins ect on sunday! Easier to see the wall of the intestine! I would rather error on the side of causion to make sure!

do make sure they take 5-10 samples! and good luck!!!!

Thanks @Beverage for checking in!  I haven't changed the dogs' food yet.  I'm still working through some of the other issues that I need to remedy (transitioning to an anti-inflammatory diet, being sure to get only gluten-free certified items, and buying some new cookware for my kitchen).  Somewhere after that, I have on my list to try out the dogs on a new dog food, but I haven't gotten there yet.  In the meantime, though, I can definitely see that some of my worst days seem to follow when there's a possibility of gluten cross-contamination (I'm still working to cut waaay down on these instances) OR when I eat anything with dairy/ milk protein in it.  So I think I need to really get a better handle on my day-to-day eating habits to reduce all gluten cross-contamination into my food and also any dairy intake, and then at that point, I think I'll start moving over to the dog food thing.

Sounds like fun, and I was in Germany a few years ago so you might find these articles helpful:

I don't think you have the URL/site address correct, as there is nothing at that site.

Hello All I am traveling to Germany in October and will be in Berlin, Rothenburg ODT , Salzburg, Fussen and Munich.  I am also driving the northern part of the romantic road with stops in some of the smaller towns along the way.  I would really appreciate any recommendations for gluten-free friendly places, restaurants and any gluten-free beer gardens.  Thanks in advance, Laura
