Glutened By My New Puppy?

I was suspicious that I was being glutened, but could not figure out what on earth I could have eaten, as I am fanatical about checking everything. I got a new puppy over a week ago, and the symptoms seem to have worsened, especially the joint pain and constipation. My friend says it's because I am exercising (walking) more and my body isn't used to it, but I think that when Max (the dog) kisses me around the mouth, he may be glutening me. It's not like he's sticking his tongue in my mouth (ick), but he does lick my face and close to my mouth. I checked his Eukanuba puppy chow, and that was safe, but his Snausages have wheat in them and his chewy treat bone may have wheat, too (I threw out the packaging).

The question is this: Has anyone here ever been glutened by their dog????? :o

Yep. My dog has accidentally licked me on the mouth before, and bam, I got sick. Now, I only feed him gluten free food--he eats Nutro's Lamb and Rice formula, and Pupperoni dog snacks.

Yes, I believe it is possible- I've changed all my pets to Iams and NO doggie treats because of fear of cc. Although I don't have dogs that lick my face (have a thing about that, I guess), their food gets all over the place at times and it just seemed to make sense. No hard data here, just anecdotal evidence, but, there it is! I hope you feel better soon!

I always make sure that I wash my hands welll after feeding my dog. I stopped feeding her treats (she's too fat and needs to lose weight anyway).

My brother's dog likes to have cut up carrot sticks as treats. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the gluten, and it's healthier for dog too!

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified...

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
