Against The Grain

It's been a while since I've popped in to share or had time to read what's been happening. Life gets so busy sometimes!

Last week I was able to attend our local support group meeting and afterwards we had a couple folks sharing their gluten-free wares. I had to share my discovery. One company really stood out -- the folks from Against the Grain Gourmet (www.againstthegraingourmet.com/index.htm) were there with a few of their products. They have developed gluten-free rolls, baguettes, bagels, pizza crusts and pizza. I was able to try the baguettes and rolls and was impressed. It was the first time I'd tried a roll or french bread that was any where similar to the wheat counterpart. They are light and airy like rolls and french bread should be. I bought two baguettes and a bag of rolls over the weekend at Whole Foods (freezer section). I brought a roll to a cookout Saturday and tested it with a hamburger. It was fantastic! I was so happy! The juice from the burger didn't cause the bread to become immediately soggy. It held up and it tasted really good.

These products aren't available everywhere yet. They are predominantly available in New England, but they have plans to expand their distribution this year. If you live in an area where you can purchase their products, I recommend checking them out. I was really thrilled that they were at our meeting to share their products. I'm grateful to the folks that have a gift when it comes to cooking and baking and have taken the time to create these wonderful products to share with us.

I work in Brattleboro, VT. where they are made. They are about to open a gluten free bakery dowtown. Whole Foods in Boston has there stuff. It is awesome!! But, they use dairy and eggs in the recipe so not good for some.

I think I saw your post about this. Definitely let us know when they do, Brattleboro isn't too far for me to drive. I'd definitely take a day trip to stock up.

where do you live? The cheapest place to find there products is Greenfields market in Greenfield Mass. The products are only 5.99 instead of 7 dollars or more at other places. I heard the bakery will sell the stuff just as expensive as the stores. If you come here go to the Brattleboro Food Co-op. Their sit in eatery has all food labeled gluten free or not. They also sell a new gluten free bread made in town called Walk On water. It is really good. I can't eat it though because it is made with white rice which bothers me.

I live in Western Mass -- I don't think Greenfield is too far. I'll have to check it out. The baguettes were almost $8 and the rolls were about $6 at Whole Foods. I was okay spending that because I'm not a huge bread eater. But, if I can get other things in Greenfield, it is probably worth the drive. Thank you for the tip :-)

I have been patiently waiting for them to hit Pa!!!! Can you compare them to Everybody Eats? they also have to die for crusty rolls & baguettes. Also which is better Walk on Water or Against the Grain?

thanks for your opinion

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?

Thankyou so much for your words. Its a hard battle when a supposed well known hospital whose celiac " specialist " has down played me because my colon looks fine and put it in my medical and so pcp doesn't take seriously. In their eyes we all carry that gene.Im having alot of bad days trying to be positive because of it.
