Hydrogen Breath Test

My GI doc wants to do a hydrogen breath test this coming Friday to test for

bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.

Has anyone had one of these? What was it like? Anything I really need to know in advance so I'm not caught off guard that day?

Thanks!

I just got diagnosed 2 weeks ago and one of the tests my doctor did was the breathing test. It was easy. I just blew into a bag that they sent off to the lab. If they use the same method it's a peice of cake. Oh - but I don't eat cake anymore! <_<

What ever came of this for you? I just did a forum search for this as I just took my first antibiotic today (I tested positive for SIBO yesterday). I'm on antibiotics for 10 days...is that long enough? What kinds of experiences have all of you had?

Thanks in advance,

Sally

I was positive for SIBO...you can look for some threads in this forum. I was given 10 days of abx and it did nothing for my symptoms, but I also have other health issues. The test was REALLY easy....but VERY boring! ;)

The abx made me feel awful for about 5-7 days (which I was told is normal and to be expected) and then I started to feel like I did before the abx.

I had it

test is so easy..........

there is a long thread on here about it.

i was only one point over but GI wanted me to try abx. Forgot the name but started with "R"

on the 9th day i got bloody 'd'

it sure didn't do one thing to help me but..............i did not have a high test score so i may not be the one to ask.

Don't sweat the thest tho..........really

then you'll know

I agree that the test was really boring; I sat around in a cold room with another patient while an older

doctor came & went with his little hydrogen breathalyzer device. Turns out the other lady patient

has a son with Crohn's disease though & we talked about food intolerances awhile, so that was interesting. My test turned out negative, so he sent me on my way.

Thanks for writing & bringing this subject up again. I had forgotten all about it! :D

I'm getting one of these done next month. Sounds like I should bring a book, eh?

Absolutely my point with Kerrigan, the owner. She stood to secure many years of faithful patronage by simply inviting us in for a pastry or lunch. Or by simply producing another $50 e-card based on trust. We would have been highly satisfied. We are limited to a few restaurants in the area, and that would have been one. It was very disappointing, esp to my wife, to realize we can't patronize the place anymore.

You would think any business would see the wisdom of honoring a $50 gift certificate on the basis of customer satisfaction alone, apart from any questions about software glitches.

So there was no physical, plastic card involved, correct?

When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.
