Dreaming About Forbidden Foods?

Maybe it's because I was just diagnosed with Celiac a few days ago, but every nite since then I've had dreams about slipping up. First it was a dream that I was in a meeting at work and absent-mindedly picked up one of those evil "munchkin" donuts, then fretted about it afterword. Last nite it was drinking a beer first thing in the a.m. (so funny because I hate beer and CERTAINLY would not drink it in the a.m.). It's sort of comical...

Could be driven by the fact that gluten gives me terrible stomach cramps pretty much immediately, and I'm now fearful of being contaminated!

Has anyone else had this hilarious "side effect"?

occasionally i do dream about eating gluten food.. and then in my dream ill be like omg! what have i done! but usually i realize during the dream that it's a dream. it's always something i just end up laughing about when i wake up but in my dreams sometimes i get pretty freaked out that i cheated.

I have had lots of those dreams, where I mindlessly eat something, and then I realize... And it is this horrible sinking feeling. I am always so grate ful that it is not real. My best friend is a sober alcoholic, and she said she used to get the same dreams, only about drinking.

I can relate. I have the stomach-cramping symptoms and I once dreamt of going to a really dark restaurant with my family. They gave me a chocolate cake, told me it was gluten-free, and I ate it. Then I realized it was dumb and I wondered if I should puke it up so less gluten would get through me or just let it go. It was horrible!...and it happened only a few weeks ago, so I never would have done something like that--I was 8 months in and paranoid about gluten consumpton! :o

Often I dream that I eat gluten, by accident or on purpose, and then have to run around insane thinking of what to do and how bad it was to have eaten it.

I've been gluten-free for a year now and my dreams have only started recently. It seems that my rebelious streak comes out in my dreams. In dreams, I realize that I shouldn't have the bread in my hand, and then it's like GR-R-R and I take this hugh bite! But, as long as it's only a dream, it doesn't hurt! granny

I dreamt I had a cookie with one of my sprouted wheat sandwiches.

The cool thing is, dreams don't get me sick. Hehe.

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
