Hi my name is Veronica and I leave in italy.

In december I will spend some days in florida close to melbourne beach with my family and we plan to go to Dinsey in orlando.

I have a 9 years old girl named Matilde and I' am asking some help to let her have an happy vacation too.

1) we have a food shopping guide: do you have one too ?

in case can you telll me where i could buy it?

2) do you know which kind of ice cream brand we can eat ?

3) do you know which french fries we can have and the one we should avoid ?

4) do you know which brand of chocolate she can have? and also do you have a list of chips?

We live in Venice italy. If you plan a trip over here I would be more than glad to help you with everything.

ciao veronica

Veronica:

My dream vacation would be to go to Italy, so hopefully some day you can help me out with what to eat there. :D

In the mean time, I can try to answer your questions:

1) I do not have a shopping guide, but many big food corp. have good labeling policies in place. For example, all Kraft products have gluten stated on the label if it is present in any form.

2) Ice cream - Edy's brand and Breyers are gluten free unless they have something like cookie or brownie in them. The label will clearly state. If you want to eat ice cream out, Dairy Queen has a gluten free menu on line. Their soft serve vanilla and chocolate are safe.

3) French Fries - Ore Ida brand is safe for their regular ones. Just read the labels. There is also Cascadian Farms brand.

4) Chocolate - full size Hershey Bars, Snickers Bars, M & Ms.

There are a lot more options in all these categories. If you need more assistance, please feel free to contact me. We went to Disney World last year also. It was great!

Best wishes.

Ciao Veronica! Sono andato in Italia venti anni fa, e lo manto molto! Sei settimane dapertutto Italia....una semana a Venizia. (my Italian is bad, it's been a long time, y adesso studio espanol y rovino il mil italiano!)

We don't really have shopping lists....but most companies are good about listing ingredients. If there is a Trader Joe's nearby, you will have very good luck there. American food can be FULL of junk and chemicals, so by very careful...

Try this store - you'll like it:

Open Original Shared Link

You can buy many gluten-free things there, and they have a list in the back, also employees are very helpful. Their ice cream, Double Rainbow, is very good and gluten-free (but not like your delicious gelato :(). They have TONS of chips, too, and they are healthier than chips in regular stores (less ingredients)...corn chips, potato chips, veggie chips....I LOVE the Soy Flaxseed Tortilla Chips and buy them every week. Also they should have all kinds of chocolate. (and in regular stores, you can get Snickers Bars and M& M's as Gina mentioned.)

Many people say that Disney World is very good for Celiacs, especially in their restaurants ( they will make gluten-free pancakes, and other things).

Buona vacanza! Let us know if we can help with anything else.

Hi! Hope you enjoy your stay here!

1. Call Disney ahead of time and let them know about your allergies /Celiacs. They are great!!!! I have some lists from my last trip there, but you should contact them for the latest. If you are staying at the resorts, they will have gluten-free safe foods for her. Same thing if you eat at any of the character dining events.

2. Restaurants: PF CHangs (asian), Outback (steak/grill), Cheeseburger in Paradise (they have french fries that are safe :o). LeeRoy Selmans (sports bar good food and gluten-free beer) All of these restaurants have gluten-free menus. You should be able to find them online.

3. Fast food: Wendys is the only one I will eat at. You have to ask if the fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer. But still , the food is good enough. You can go on-line for their gluten-free menu. (I would not eat at McDonalds.)

4. Not sure what the shopping guide is. Look online at ClanThompson.com. They have paperback books that are small, but cover a lot of food and restaurants. I have bought these lists in the past and leave them in the car. Helps for grocery shopping, restaurnats, over the counter medications, etc.

5. Publix is a grocery store here in Florida. You can contact them for a list of gluten-free foods that are Publix brand.

6. Ice Cream: Cold Stone Creamery, Ben & Jerrys, and Basket and Robbins are all chain stores that have allergen lists. Usually you can ask for it at the store. Just always ask that they use a clean scoop. And do not have the ice cream smashed and add ins added at Cold Stone. Just get it straight into the cup.

Hope that helps a bit!

In response to your questions regarding probiotics.  I have had Celiac for 40 years.  Stomach issues: digestion, IBS to chronic constipation, bloat after eating anything.  I was unable to eat a healthy variety of foods, tried probiotics supplements - some made me worse, others made no difference.  After reading about people with Crones, IBS, etc, who made their own probiotics I started making Milk Kefir: not water Kefir. There are 10 probiotics in milk KEFIR. After 3 weeks I was able to eat more, no gas, no IBS.  If you have a computer just ask for videos on making milk Kefir. I branched out and make my own Kombucha for even more probiotics. I do not make my yogurt because there are only about four probiotics in that. I started this when I was 82 and I still make my own Kefir and Kombucha. My stomach issues were fixed with the Milk Kefir alone. If you decide to try making it, make certain you order MILK GRAINS. The finished product tastes a bit like Buttermilk. I hope this helps in your journey to good health.

Help me out here. Lauren Dam gluten-free beer from Spain is listed as gluten free. Yet its made from Barley Malt. I thought barley and any form had gluten. Anybody have any more information about it?

Ferritin levels.  And see what your hemoglobin looks like too, that will tell you if you are anemic?  You can have 'low normal' levels that will not be flagged by blood tests.  I had 'low normal' levels, my lab reading was. c12, just over what was considered normal, but I had small benign lesion on my tongue, and sometimes a sore mouth, and a consultant maxillofacial ordered an iron infusion for me as he felt my levels were too low and if he  raised them to 40, it would help.   Because you are not feeling 100% it might be worth looking at your levels, then discussing with your doctor if they are low normal.  But I stress, don't supplement iron without your levels being monitored, too much is dangerous.

Hi Katht -  I sympathize with your struggles in following a gluten-free diet and lifestyle. I found out that I had Celiac Disease a few months before I turned 70. I just turned 89 and it has taken me almost 20 years to attain a fairly normal intestinal  function. I also lost a lot of weight, down to 100 lb. down from about 140 lb. What Trents wrote you was very true for me. I am still elimination foods from my diet. One person suggested you keep a food diary and that is a good idea but it is probably best just to do an elimination diet. There are several ne and maybe one for celiacs. I used one for a while and started with plain rice and zucchini and then added back other foods to see if I reacted or not. That helped a great deal but what I did not realise that it would only very small amounts of some foods to cause inflammation in my intestine. Within the last few years I have stopped eating any trace amounts of hot peppers, corn and soy(mostly in supplements) and nuts, (the corn in Tylenol was giving me stomach aches and the nuts were causing foot pains). Starting an elimination diet with white rice is better than brown rice that has some natural toxins. In addition it is very important to drink sufficient plain water. You can find out how much to drink for your height and weight online. I do have difficulty drinking 48 ounces of water but just recently have found an electrolyte supplement that helps me stay well hydrated, Adding the water and electrolytes may reduce muscle cramps and gag spams you wrote about. . Also buy some anti-gluten enzyme capsules to take with meals. I use GliadinX advertised here. These are a lot of things to do at one time as they reflect my 20 years of experience. I hope you do what you can manage to do over time. Good luck and take care.
