We are going on a Princess Cruise over Christmas and were wondering if we were allowed to take food on the ship. We have faxed them about our special needs, but were wondering about snacks. If anyone knows anything that can help we would appreciate it.

I'm glad you posted this question. I went on an 11 day cruise last year (another cruise line) and inquired ahead of time about passengers with special diet needs. At that time I was lactose intolerant, and was told they had a lactose free menu. Not true!! The maitre' d and waiter tried very, very hard to accomodate my food needs, but everything on the menu had lactose in it. I was sick the entire time. I was able to get some soy milk for about 3 days, but after that, there was none. I existed on hamburger patty, salad, chips, jello, gatorade, fruit. 50% of the price of a cruise is for food, and I certainly was short changed. Since the cruise, I have been diagnosed with celiac, casein, soy issues in addition to the lactose intolerance. Would I go on a cruise again? definately yes, only under different circumstances. I would bring along a suitcase of "my" food. And I would make sure I would have access to boiling hot water, or a small microwave somewhere on the ship so I can prepare some food. I don't know if this would be allowed, but it is time to find out, because I intend to cruise again. It will be interesting to see what the replies will be.

Can you tell us which cruise line it was? It is helpful to know who is good with special diets and who isn't.

Thanks!

Michelle

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
