Best Resource To Determine If Glugen Free

Hello,

I am newly diagnosed with Celiac sprue. I have had symptoms for the last year or so. My blood tests were positive and I had a biopsy which confirmed the disease.

Before the diagnosis I lost about 20 pounds. I am trying hard to eat the right things so that I can gain some weight back and gain some energy. One of the biggest problem is actually determining if something is Gluten free. I have an appointment with a nutritionist next week, but I would love some book, or web page that I could just look up the product name and brand and they would tell me if it was Gulten free.

I'm probably asking too much. Anyone have a good resource? any suggestions?

Vicki

If you're looking for a source that will tell you whether every product in a given store is gluten-free or not, then, yes, you're hoping for too much. It doesn't exist. And I wouldn't put too much hope in the nutritionist unless he or she is an expert in celiac. Most people have gotten more help from the Internet.

Start slow and simple. Eat fresh fruit, vegetables and meat that you cook yourself. Eggs are gluten-free. So are hard block cheeses like cheddar or monterey jack.

There are several lists of foods out there and they are helpful in that they can point you toward some specific products to check out. But most of these lists also items that haven't been rechecked in a long time. One such list is here:

Open Original Shared Link

Note that each product will have a date in parens beside it. That date tells you when the product was last checked.

Also, if you go to this page Open Original Shared Link and click on the celiac forum rules and FAQ, there are a number of files with helpful hints. And one file has a list of companies that will clearly list gluten or wheat.

Celiac.com here also has some food lists and some very good info. Cruise around, read and ask questions.

Thank you.

I will check them out. It turns out that my physician has celiac and his wife is the nutritionists. I am hopeful that they will provide some imput.

Thanks again for the information

You should definitely have better luck than most. My physician also has celiac.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
