Japanese Curry Roux Will Go gluten-free!

DH discovered today that one brand of Japanese curry roux will go gluten-free. Increasingly there are Japanese children's foods that are being made gluten-free. One of them is the Curry no Ojisama brand curry roux. It has always come in a small blue box and the new gluten-free version is supposed to be in red packaging. It is smaller in portion and more mild than it's grown up counterparts but will be nice to have back all the same. Who knows if or when it will make it to the states(currently the blue box is available here) but I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

EDIT:Please read my response to Ken's post before purchasing this product. I have not provided a complete translation of the allergen information. It is an exciting discovery but requires further, careful investigation.

Thanks for the info, I miss the quick S&B, Vermont and House curries I would make when rushed.

I'll be back in Japan in March and if you remind me, I'll bring a bunch back with me in April.

last March in Japan I went to a seminar on the increase in wheat allergies in Japanese school age children and was hoping the food industry would respond like this!

It's great news for me!

thanks again!

This is the link to the S&B page of allergen free products. They do have an English homepage but it doesn't include the page on allergen-free products.

DH was on looking to see if he could find out if the curry powder is gluten-free. In my excitement I was hasty in posting :( and have gone back to recheck. Many on that page are wheat-free and interestingly they are using sorghum, but we have e-mailed the company to ask further questions about carmel color and gluten just to be sure. I'll let you know what we find out.

Oh, I'm so excited to read this! I've been trying to make my own curry "roux," but it just doesn't compare! Thanks for posting! I'll look for it!!!

There are a number of sorghum based soy sauces I brought back last year but never could find a boxed curry without some form of gluten.

Seems like they may have something now.

Will look again in March when I'm at this FoodEx show in Chiba.

Just an update.

DH found the cream stew mix(but not curry) on recent trips to both LA and Chicago. It's the one in the tall red box in the fourth section down on the site that I linked to on a previous post. The only ingredient I wonder about is the MSG but I've been eating it :o with no problem! It has four sticks of powder, like the ones dashi comes in. It's made for kids so is very mild in flavor and doesn't thicken up as much as the roux cubes we're used to. I added some salt and pepper. I'm enjoying it more out of nostalgia than anything.

Thanks for the update,

Just checked on Wednesday. We don't have it here but I'll be in Japan next month and look there for it as well as a ton of other stuff. Last year i shipped back 9 boxes of goodies!

From the allergen page:

※本品は小麦を含む製品と共通の設備で製造しています。

- This item is manufactured from a product including wheat and common equipment.

They removed the wheat flour but it's NOT gluten free

Thanks for the clarification. You're referring to the one furthest down on the page in the red box that is roux cubes(which is the one I originally posted about).

Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
