I've written the company but so far not recieved any reply yet... they list the ingredients on the bags but some say flavors so I'm not sure if they are gluten-free or not. does anyone happen to know?

I used to eat the blue chips from them and they were good, but the last two bags I bought I got sick from them so I haven't eaten them in probably 2 years. I tend to go with a brand until I get sick then I figure they must not be cleaning their lines well enough between gluten and gluten free products or they changed their recipe.

The Denver chapter of Celiac Sprue Association produces a product book that the lady (I used to live there) kept up really well. If you join their chapter they will mail you newsletter regularly that tell of changes people have found. That chapter of CSA is very active and informative (their meetings were great to go to).

Hope this helps some.

I spoke with a representative of Garden of Eatin after my daughter had a bad allergic reaction from eating the blue chips (she is allergic to wheat). They say their products are not gluten free because they are produced on the same lines as products that contain gluten.

This a copy of the email they sent me after I talked with them.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding our Garden Of Eatin Products. We strive to maintain high quality consistent products and appreciate your patronage.

Due to the nature of most manufacturing facilities, and the number of products that they handle, we cannot guarantee that a given ingredient would not be handled on the same equipment or in the same facility. We avoid cross contamination through good manufacturing practices and a strict allergen control program - this includes proper sanitation and production sequence, as well as proper storage of raw materials. In addition, employee training and education plays an important role. We do follow current FDA regulations regarding the labeling of allergens, if any is used it would be listed in the ingredients label.

Thank you for your continued support of The Hain Celestial Group. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-434-4246, Monday through Friday from 7AM - 5PM Mountain Time.

If you want a safe alternative, Green Mountain Gringo corn chips are made at a dedicated factory. Their salsas are also gluten free. I spoke with the company and confirmed this. Good Luck.

Ok thanks so much, I ate them the other day and didn't feel right that's why I thought I better look into them. I'll try the Green Mountains' if I can find them, thanks!

I have been eating these chips for several months and my intestinal problems have not improved. Maybe this is part of the reason. I am so frustrated-I just can't seem to get this diet right!

Yes I was eating them too.... try not to get frustrated...(easier said then done I know..) but life is a learning experience, every day should be and I just feel glad now that I know they are not gluten-free. I've only been doing this for just over 2 months and I know there is a huge learning curve.

pixiegirl,

Thanks for the words of support. I have tried being gluten-free since March 2004, but I just don't feel like I am doing a very good job. Three medications that were prescribed to me by my gastro. doctor contained gluten, and I had to discover this myself. This is what is nice about this forum. Everyone is trying to help everyone else.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
