Anyone With A Kid With Totally Neurological Symptoms?

Hello!

My 11-year-old was having terrible neurological symptoms and it took me quite a while to figure out that they were caused by gluten. When we first went gluten-free, he did great! Even he could see the dramatic changes. But now it's been a couple of months, and I think he's forgotten how bad it was. He is missing his pizza, macaroni and cheese, all the normal foods that most kids eat. He has to bring some food if he goes to a party, and has to turn down the yummy cupcakes and treats that other kids bring in when it's their birthday. His sister is also gluten-intolerant, but she is very good about staying on the diet because she gets stomach pains and ugly rashes if she eats gluten, so that's a good deterrent. But he doesn't have the pain and discomfort. How do you get a young boy who thinks he's indestructible to stay on a restrictive diet when he doesn't see the immediate effects of cheating? Any ideas?

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
