Help With Results

My TTG Antibody was <3 (reference range 5U/ml)

IGA, Serum 79 L (reference range 81-463 mg/dl)

IGG <3 (reference range <7 U/ml)

THe out of range one is the IGA serum but I feel confused. Does that result matter? Seems like I can't get any info in the web about the specific area. Does anyone know what that test means?

Thank you-

Anyone? The advice would be appreciated. My doctor just said go see a GI but my insurance and copays are screaming right now. I would rather start the diet than pay $100 to be told to start it.

Then there is no reason not to. It will give you the best answer anyway. You don't need a doctors permission to be gluten free. If after a couple of months following the diet strictly you are still wondering if it is an issue a short (till you react) gluten challenge will tell you all you need to know. Do bear in mind that many of us have an issue with dairy also, that may resolve. It is best to eliminate dairy for a bit also. I hope you feel better soon. Ask any questions you need to and read, read, read.

I am not positive but I think the low serum IGA would mean that the other test results would be negative no matter whether you are celiac or not. In other words, since the IGA is deficient it will make the other tests a false negative. If I am wrong hopefully someone will correct me.

Thank you, I truly appreciate the help. Do you know if certain factors affect the results? I had a stomach virus that week where both my daughter and I had diarrhea. Mine was just twice as much. Would a virus affect the results?

As far as I know a virus wouldn't affect the results, at least I don't think so. But a low total IgA means you don't make a lot of IgA antibodies in the first place so the TTG test is kinda useless in your case like Ravenwood said. That said, negative blood tests are quite common with celiac so it doesn't mean you can't have it. If you want to have an official diagnosis you should see a GI doctor to have a biopsy of your small intestine. If you don't need an official diagnosis there's nothing stopping you from trying the diet.

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

Thanks to both of you for your responses!  Sadly, even after several years of very strict gluten avoidance, I remember the symptoms well enough that I am too frightened to risk a gluten challenge— heartbeat and breathing problems are scary— Scott, thank you for the specific information— I will call around in the new year to see if I can find anyone. In the meantime, I will carry on has I have been— it’s working! Thanks also for the validation— sometimes I just feel crushed by disbelief. Not enough to make me eat gluten though—
