I Don't Know...

Hi everyone!

so here is the low down....

I am 16 years old and have unexpectedly been losing weight. I have gone from 125 - 119 in 3 weeks without changing any eating habits and I am approximatley5'8" ( maybe a little bit shorter :P ) . My symptoms mostly include D...It happens after I eat wheat/barley products mostly, usually about 4-5 hours after. After that for the next 2-3 days I am constipated and then have D again as I cotinue to eat wheat. Also after eating wheat products I have a pain kind of in my gut and I feel really anxious.

I was just tested on Monday and I am hoping for some results that will help me to get some results.

I have already been tested for IBS and ulcers and both have been negative.

Do you all think that I have celiacs/do these symptoms seem relevant? I am very nervous/ anxious to get my tests back!!

Thank you!! :D

Not only is D after eating wheat/barley a symptom of celiac, so is C, and so is anxiety!

However, be warned that lots of folks here had negative test results, but still felt better from eliminating gluten. Dont start yet, as your doctor may want to do a biopsy and you should keep eating gluten until after the biopsy. But even if the tests come back negative, you can still try the diet and see if it helps.

Yes, I agree that it sounds like Celiac or gluten intolerance to me. As dbmamaz said, you can still try the diet no matter what the test results. It also seems like you already know the answer, since you've narrowed it down to eating wheat products.

So glad you figured it out so soon too. Many of us suffered for years before we had a clue.

Welcome to the board!

Thank you :)

If you don't mind my asking, how long did it take for your test results to come back? I had the blood work done this past Monday and I still have not heard anything back. My first GI appt. is this upcoming Monday.

Also do you have any suggestions for what I should tell the doctor?

I really hope that these tests will bring back answers because I'm pretty sure that my mom won't let me go for a gluten-free diet unless there is a medical reasoning behind it!

Again, thank you so much for all of you help!!

Hi,  My 7 year daughter has complained of this in the past, which I thought were part of her glutening symptom, but more recently I have come to figure out it's part of her histamine overload symptom. This one symptom was part of her broader profile, which included irritability, extreme hunger, confusion, post-nasal drip. You might want to look up "histamine intolerance". I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
