Hello,

I just found out that I will be moving to Washington, DC in the summer for at least 2 years, but probably longer. I will be spending most of my time at/near Georgetown U, but I will be most likely living in Virginia or Maryland.

Does anyone have any experience in eating on Georgetown's campus or the surrounding area, or any recommendations on any locations with cheap, safe food. (and preferably cheap rent  ). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

There are a ton of great restaurants that are gluten free. As for cheap rent, not so much.

1. Jaleo/Austin Grill/Oyamel/Zaytina/Cafe Atlantico all have a special gluten free menu

2. California tortilla has some gluten-free options as well

3. lots of the sushi places are really helpful

hope that helps!!! i find when i call ahead most of the restaurants are willing to help

Lots of options!

I second Lilit Cafe! It's so nice to be able to sit down and order pizza and beer just like everyone else!

Just to update anyone moving to DC, here is what I found--

In Georgetown: SweetGreen, Qdoba, Chipotle, 5 Guys, and the Tombs were my staples. The Tombs is amazing with allergies, I highly recommend it. The same people (I think) own Clydes, so I am sure they would be easy too.

In Rosslyn/Court House: Silver Diner, Pho 75, Baja Fresh, California Tortilla, Chipotle

Bethesda: Original House of Pancakes, Austin Grill, Chipotle, Baja Fresh, and supposedly Lilit Cafe...

I tried Lilit Cafe, but they messed up my take-out order/I was recovering from norovirus, so I have nothing really to report :o .

My gosh, is the Tombs still open. That's where we went, when we skipped Mr. Barletts government class, to hang out. (but don't tell my mom  )

Flemings in McLean/Tysons Corner, VA is very accommodating. The waiter was fairly knowledgeable about wheat and I explained to him that it included barley and rye as well. He was pleasant and understanding and wasn't afraid to ask me questions back, which I appreciated.

Ted's Montana Grill was really great and have a gluten-free menu. The one I went to was in Crystal City (Arlington) and is a very short walk from the metro. I know this may not apply to the original poster but it may apply to those still looking lol

BTB, does anyone know if you can get to that Lilith Cafe from the DC metro? I am living in Crystal City / interning in DC for the summer and both were right off the metro so I didn't feel the need to have a car with me.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
