My doctor put me on Elacon for my vitiligo. It is a steroid cream often used for psoriasis. One of the side effects is weght gain and unwanted hair growth. I have had both since starting the cream, but I think he thought I was nuts (could be correct). Have any of you had any experience with this type of topical ?

Those side effects would be unusal for a topical cream Vitiligo is autoimmune and often associated with other endocrine disorders. These are the listed side effects from the ointment: The side effects you have can be a result of oral steroids, or conditions of the adrenal gland or pituitary gland.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, notify your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using Elocon.

More common side effects may include:

Acne-like pimples, allergic skin rash, boils, burning, damaged skin, dryness, excessive hairiness, infected hair follicles, infection of the skin, irritation, itching, light colored patches on skin, prickly heat, rash around the mouth, skin atrophy and wasting, softening of the skin, stretch marks, tingling or stinging

I don't think you should use that. I know i'm not a doctor, but believe me i know. i have it. You should ask him to give you a prescription for a clear gel called Clobavate AND for a cream called Protopic. My dermatologist told me to use it as so:clobavate for one week every other night. then the next week protopic every other night then back and forth. These have both really seemed to work for me. If you would like to contact me furthur, about any questions or etc.you may. Alrighty then, byeee.

Thanks. Apparently, thought rare, the weight gain etc. may be due to the steroid cream. I finally went to my normal internist. She said the combo of how I was using it (the dermatologist had not been very clear) and the fact that my system is pretty sensitive both contributed to the many side effects I was having. After about a week of withdrawal, I am on the road to normal again. I will ask about the 2 creams you suggest. Although vitiligo is an autoimmune problem, mine always kicks in when I am having other issues. This time it hit at the same time the symptoms for celiac became noticeable.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
