Hi, I have been very strict with my gluten free diet since Jan 28th. Lately I am having terribly swollen feet and hands. Is this related to Celiac or just too much salt? Anyone else every experience anything similar?

Thanks,

Wendy

I have this problem when the weather gets hot. My solution is to drink more water, walk as much as possible, and elevate my feet at night. As I only have the problem in hot weather, I'm not sure whether I should blame salt or gluten. Or the weather!

Are you having other issues? For me this would be gluten related but it would not be the only symptom. It would be accompanied by joint and muscle pain, a migraine, DH breakout and tummy upset a few days later if it was gluten.

Like the previous poster I also do get swollen hands in the hot weather but when that occurs I don't have any of the other issues.

If both hands and feet are noticeablly swollen and you do not have any other symptoms of a glutening and it does not resolve soon you may want to run it by your doctor to be on the safe side. There can be many causes of edema and some of us have kidneys impacted by celiac so do check it out if it does not resolve by cutting your salt and increasing water intake..

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
