Intestional Swelling

Hello everyone,

I was just diagnosed with celiac 3 weeks ago. I really never had any GI problems, what sent me to the doctor was swelling in my intestines. After the endoscopy, there was no doubt it was celiac. The swelling started in February and continues to this day. The dr thought it was caused by bacterial overgrowth and put me on antibiotics, but I don't see any changes. The swelling is very uncomfortable and painful at times. My organs feel like they are being pushed up into my ribs. The dr is talking about another round of antibiotics, but i'm not sold. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have. I went through all kinds of tests because as a late diagnosis person my regular doctor wanted to make sure it was not a growth of some kind. It wasn't. All they found was that my intestines are 'misplaced' (the actual term the ultrasound tech used) and that the walls of my intestines were thickened. I had been gluten-free for 4 years at that point. After lots of tests and a round of a drug that I was allergic to the doc basically shrugged his shoulders and said they didn't know for sure what it was. I then did another elimination diet and for me the culprit was soy. Within a month soy free the swollen feeling was gone. I am NOT saying for sure that this is the case for you but you may want to try eliminating soy and I would also eliminate dairy for a bit if the antibiotic route does not help.

Other symptoms that Celiac Disease can cause but resemble other diseases so the cause may be misdiagnosed. What Are the Symptoms of Celiac Disease?

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
