Anyone else have these annoying, persistent effects when you were just starting to go gluten-free? This has been a problem for a long time, and I thought it was thyroid (I was dx'ed hypo last summer), but it's been pronounced normal now, so is it a celiac thing? I am constantly clearing my throat and using eye drops, but I have no other signs of allergies. Any thoughts on how long it takes to let up??

My throat is a lot better----have to watch the sugar, cause it will cause reflux symptoms. Dry eyes haven't changed---I use prescription eye drops.

I'm not sure what to tell you. My sister and I both lost our voices long before going gluten free. We lost them for nearly an entire summer. Now we have these raspy voices, very similiar to each other, so much so, that when she leaves me a voicemail on my phone, I actually think I am listening to myself at first!!! That happened to us when our boys were in little league, and they are grown men now--we have both been gluten gree for 8 yrs.

As for the dry eye, I have suffered with that for about 2 yrs now. It's been really bad this last winter and spring. Maybe you should check into Sjogrens Disease. Read up on it. Allergies also cause dry eye and dry throat.

OMG...you lost your voice??!! That would kill me!! I sing constantly, and it's the only thing that keeps me from going over the edge most days. (Now Im wondering if that's what's happening to my son. He's nearly 14, so his voice is deepening, but it has a funky raspiness to it...actually, my brother's does, too. Hmm...)

Our kids were in heaven! :lol: They thought it wonderful, no yelling at them! Honest, it lasted all summer.

Now, men tell me it's a very sexy voice! :P

Dairy gives me the constant hurrrumph, makes me feel horrible, causes constipation and I am sure it has contributed to the dry eyes which do seem a bit better since I dropped both dairy and gluten.

I still get some catarrgh even without them both but I hope that will improve as my body finally gets rid of a lot of the crud it has been carting around for the last 50 years!

Nobody says how old they are, but dry eyes can be part of the natural aging process and . . . dare I say it . . . menopause.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.
