Need Diet Soda, No Aspartame

A statement like this really should be backed up with links.

I would suggest folks that are concerned do a search with the words 'splenda and adverse reactions' A lot will come up and then people can decide whether they want to use this.

I get so frustrated when I look for info on Splenda. The peer-reviewed research that says it's safe is mostly funded by the manufacturer. The journal articles very clearly state the source of funding, as is required. There are a few other safety studies out there, with only one rat study that managed to find anything. With rather high doses, they got effects on liver enzymes and changes in gut microflora. To even approach the low dose, you'd need to have to be eating and drinking Splenda-sweetened drinks and baked goods at every meal, every day, for weeks on end. Also, studies on rats do not always translate very well to humans. This study is certainly not representative of a human drinking a can or two of soda.

To my amusement, a hired panel published an article shooting this particular study down. Notice the scientists are listed as "independent consultants", meaning that they were probably paid by the Splenda manufacturer.

If I just go to Google all I can find is people repeating all the various fear campaigns that the sugar lobby started. Their fear campaign about the chlorine atoms on Splenda was a brilliant ploy and has been repeated all over the Internet, scaring people into buying sugar again for years now.

The latest rumor is "the manufacturer has confirmed Splenda causes seizures and migraines" but again I suspect the sugar lobby at work. There is nothing on the FDA site about analysis of their passive surveillance, which has to be made public by law if it has been done. There are certainly some stories out there of people who can't tolerate Splenda, but there are a stories about just about anything we eat or drink because of individual sensitivities.

There is a brand called 'Waist Watchers' that uses Splenda. The Black Cherry is ok but tastes VERY sweet (they might haver root beer too, not sure). In a way it kind of works for me because rather than chugging down 2 glasses of it (or 3) I can just pour half a glass and sip on it to get that sweet taste I'm craving because a little of this stuff goes a long way...

I also drink regular Coke and Water. I used to drink Seltzer but man the gas... whooopa!!!!

Thanks for your insight. I've been eating wheat bread at least 5 times a week for several months. I've been eating chicken or eggs 5 days a week for at least a year.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Churro! Several things need to be said here: 1. Your physician neglected to order a "total IGA" test to check for IGA deficiency. If a person is IGA deficient, the results of other IGA antibody tests specific to celiac disease will not be valid. A total IGA test should always be ordered when checking for celiac disease with blood IGA antibody test. You should ask your physician to order a total IGA test. 2. Iron deficiency anemia can also give distorted IGA celiac disease blood antibody tests. 3. If you were already on a gluten-free diet or had been restricting gluten consumption for weeks/months prior to the antibody testing blood draw, then the test results would not be valid. Accurate celiac disease blood antibody testing requires you to have been consuming significant amounts of gluten for a significant time period leading up to the blood draw. It takes time for the antibody levels in the blood to build up to detectable levels. 4. Your low iron levels and other symptoms could be due to celiac disease but could also be caused by lots of other medical issues.

Last month I got blood tests done. My iron level was at 205 ug/dL and 141 ug/dL iron binding capacity unsaturated, 346 ug/dl total iron binding capacity, 59 transferrin % saturation. My ferritin level was at 13 so I got tested for celiac disease last week. My tTG-IgA is <.05, DGP IgA is 4.9 and ferritin level is 9. My doctor didn't order other celiac disease tests. In 2021 I was dealing with severe constipation and hemorrhoids. I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I still deal with hemorrhoids but only about once a week. Also, I've been dealing with very pale skin for at least 5 years. Do you think I have celiac disease?

Hi Cristiana! It's so nice to meet you! Thank you for the kind reply I am glad I live in a time where you can connect with others through the Internet. That is a mercy I am grateful for.

In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link...
