Hi - New To The Board

I just joined recently and I just got tested today. Dr said I should have results in a week. We have 6 members of our family who have tested positive for Celiacs including my dad who will not follow the diet and endds up in the hosptal 2x a year with problems relating to it.

My dr told me today I need to go ahead and get on the diet. Is it hard? How long did it take you to get adjusted to eating totally different?

Yes, it can be hard, but you have come to an awesome place for support and guidance.

The best advice when first dx is to eat simply: plain meats of any kind, eggs, pure spices, veggies of any kind, fruit of any kind and if you want starches things like potatoes, squashes, fresh corn. You can eat rice, but check to make sure the brand you get is gluten free.

You may want to wait a month or so for nuts and seeds while your villi heal. And same goes for dairy. You can then add them in at that time.

Try not to eat a lot of the processed gluten-free foods as they are generally very high glycemic and hard to digest. You need to heal.

Dont try eating right now if you can help it. Once you heal and feel better, we can help you make more choices.

Welcome. It is a learning process and an adjustment but it is so worth it and it does get better. At first you may feel restricted but in time you'll find that you have alot of choices. You may also feel that you are giving up so much but again, you'll find some delicious replacement products amd learn to adapt many old recipes to gluten-free without sacrificing flavor.

You'll have a few tasks to address as you are up to it. Not necessarily in this order. Don't expect to do everything at once.

Learn about safe and unsafe ingredients/foods.

Decontaminate your kitchen.

Learn about and address cross-contamination.

Learn how to read labels and contact companies about products.

Learn how to ask questions and make special requests at restaurants. It is best for your healing process to avoid eating out at first until you learn how to manage it. There are some restaurants that have gluten-free menues and are trained to handle it.

Ask away. There are many good resources available.

      I’ve used tinctures and made my own edibles with gluten-free ingredients to stay safe. Dispensary staff don’t always know about gluten, so I double-check labels or just make my own.

      Update: I have a wonderful new gastroenterologist. She wants to be sure there’s nothing more serious, like refractory celiac, going on. She ordered various tests including some micronutrient tests that no one has ever ordered before.  I’m deficient in folate and zinc and starting supplements for both. I’m so glad I decided to go to a new GI!

      Autoimmune diseases tend to cluster. Many of them are found close together on the chromosomes.

      Just giving another update... I was referred to rheumatology, and they suspect that I may also be dealing with fibromyalgia (it has not been formally diagnosed, but just suggested at this point).  So, I am continuing with the anti-inflammatory diet and vitamins and still working to keep getting rid of all these hidden gluten sources, but I also do have another possible explanation for some of the issues that I'm dealing with.
