My Latest Mistake...

So it was a social setting with many people, potluck style. My intention was to not eat or to nibble on the fruit or cheese plates only. However, someone mentioned my being celiac so the hostess pipes up that they eat gluten free and have gluten free pasta, so she'd cook me some up (there was homemade chili & also pasta sauce). I thanked her and indulged in the corn pasta & meaty sauce. I didn't even get around to eating anything else. Tune in half an hour later and I'm sick, mildy. My symptoms were an intense headache and fatigue, sinus pain and this morning I felt hungover. I didn't actually get any nausea (just some stomach cramping) - so I'm thinking that it might have been more of a cross contamination issue than actual flour or whatever.

Chalk that up to another lesson learned. Either the corn pasta wasn't actually gluten-free or the sauce wasn't or people got pasta in the sauce or something ! Argh...next time I'll just pass.

What really bothered me about all this - besides my own stupidity - was the reason the hostess had corn pasta to begin with. She said they often eat gluten free because she did it to lose weight. She said she lost "a ton of weight" when she went gluten free. Then she said she went back to eating gluten and gained a lot of it back. Hmm....the celiac diet as a fad diet ?!?!?!??!

My sinuses still are miserable and my body hurts...but I'm gonna go for a walk with my daughter and try to enjoy the day. Sometimes getting moving helps....Blah !!! <_<

Probably the colander or something then, because if she does it to lose weight, then she wouldn't have any special kitchen stuff to prevent cross-contamination.

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
