Could I Be Feeling Symptoms 3 Days After Eating Gluten?

hi everyone -

my huzzband and i went to

a friend's house for a bbq on sunday.

(its now wednesday.)

our friend asked me if there

was anything i couldn't eat

besides gluten --

so i thought i was safe!

we ended up having a delish

flank steak (no hamburgers and dogs

at this bbq!)

well, i was helping our host

cut the steak before we sat down

and i asked what

she used as a marinade...

herbs, seasonings...SOY SAUCE!!!!!! : (

i didn't know what to do -

(i know now that many ppl dont

realized exactly what gluten is,

so i need to be more

CLEAR next time)

and i didn't want to be rude.

so i ate the steak.

(i am not sure what got into me,

i NEVER knowingly ingest gluten!!

but it did...)

and afterwards, i felt fine!

or so i thought...

on tuesday night, i started

to feel pretty crappy -

stomach ache, nausea

and today -- its 100 times worse.

a horrible stomach ache

super nauseas

exhausted

foggy headed

bathroom stuff

ugh, it sucks!

could this REALLY be from the

soy sauce marinated steak

i ate THREE DAYS AGO??!?

i thought that if i ate gluten

(esp after being glu-free for a year now!)

that i would feel the effects right away.

is it possible that i am

just feeling the effectS?

???

I've had it take that long. Usually now its 24 hours or 48. But sometimes 3 days. You know from the symptoms it couldn't be anything else...So sorry to hear you are going through this. I have found taking some of those gluten digesting enzymes at or near the time you have the gluten helps. After the fact, I have found having a couple of repeated doses of baking soda in water helps interspersed (at hour intervals) with apple cider vinegar in water... And then later if no D, detox herbs...

Yes it can definately take 3 days. When I did my MD assisted elimination diet he told me to only add foods every 7 days. Intolerances can be delayed reaction. When I added wheat back in on the elimination diet I noticed a couple little things within 24 hours but it took a full 3 days before the D hit. Even 6 years into the diet that is still my pattern. I will notice irritiability and depression right away, and my balance will take a hit and my hair will start to fall within 24 hours, but my D waits for day 3. Every body is different but eventually you will notice your personal pattern.

I've had the same thing. The weekend before last we were eating out at a restaurant that we use frequently. They know that I can't have gluten and was offered a "special" grilled vegetables and rice. It wasn't printed on the menu so I couldn't check ingredients. Before it was served they asked if it was OK if the rice was fried and not boiled and I was assured it wouldn't contain anything I couldn't have. Anyway, a day and a bit later I felt really off for about 3-4 days - a bit nauseous, night sweats, leg cramps etc. and couldn't understand why. Anyway, were at same restaurant last weekend and the "special" was printed on the menu :"fried rice in soy sauce". I asked if that was what I had had - answer yes. I had to AGAIN explain what gluten free meant and the consequences of a coeliac eating it.

It can be really annoying. Hopefully it wont happen again but just makes you realise that you need to constantly double check.

I've taken 2-3 days to react every time, and my reactions last for weeks. The longer you go gluten free, some people have less of a reaction, some people have more. Mine is more of a reaction.

My 11 yr old daughter is having a terrible reaction to gluten that I think she got at a restaurant yesterday. this is the longest it has taken her to get a reaction. It has been a long time since she has had any gluten, that must be why this one is bad. Can I ask what gluten digesting items you use Bea? She has been taking acti-zyme.

I need to get some again. Last time I was in the store I saw some "glutenzyme" I think. There are other varieties just as good that are cheaper. I'll look and let you know. As I recall they are mixtures of enzymes and probiotics.

      Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

      plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

      i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

      Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

      I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again
