Hi everyone,

Firstly, I really appreciate everybody's help - you've all given me a new will to investigate how I feel. I believe I have lived this way all my life and so am used to it. But at times, it gets really bad and I end up looking further into it.

I found this article, among others this man writes, and it so happens he lives and teaches in my city! He has so many great articles. My son has ADD and I believe he has an article on gluten and learning so I'll be checking that out. I think I must find out what's wrong with me in order to help my kids, the one with problems and the ones who may develop problems. My son btw, is a grain fanatic. He lives on cereal and milk. He is 6'3" (no growth problems there!) and weighs about 160 lbs. so he's thin! He can't focus, has trouble at school and I just had him "coded" for extra time on exams, etc.

Have a look at the article and let me know what you think - it does give me some ammunition should my doctor balk at my desire to be tested for celiac because I'm overweight. I also will be asking for my last blood test results and will check my TSH readings.

The writer of this article also wrote one on gall bladder disease and celiac for those interested. My mother had her gallbladder out 40 years ago - now I wonder if I do have celiac, if she is the parent who has it too.

That said - I may have none of these things - maybe all it is is IBS and poor eating habits...but I want to know.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
