Could Somebody Interpret These Blood Results Please?

Hi all,

I've been popping in and out for the past couple weeks - flirting with the idea that perhaps my diagnosed IBS (since 3 yrs. old) is celiac.

Here are the blood test results - could somebody interpret? I think it shows negative but will still be getting the biopsy to put this all to rest for good.

IgA T. Transglutaminase - Celiac disease is negative and the patient is IgA sufficient. This screen is only accurate if the patient receives a gluten containing diet. False negative screens rarely occur. If you still suspect celiac disease, the patient should be referred to a gastroenterologist for further evaluation prior to initiating a gluten-free diet.

Tissue 2.8 (0.0 - 20.0) kU/L

Transglutaminase IgA

Immunoglobulin A 2.46 (0.60 - 4.20) g/L

Immunoglobulin G 10.13 (6.8 - 18.00) g/L

Immunoglobulin M 0.48 (0.40 - 3.00) g/L

Ferritin 33 (10-290) ug/L

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone 1.49 (0.20 - 6.00) mU/L

Thanks for all your help,

TracyB (as an aside, although my Dr. didn't give me a copy of my son's blood results yet, she did note that he had very low immunoglobulin, but I don't know which one yet! I'll get a copy of it when I take him in next...she asked if he gets sick a lot of a lot of infections, and the answer is no. He is rarely sick. He is on two meds at the moment though...)

It does show negative for the Celiac tests they ran. There are others that are IgG based they didnt run.

Your ferritin is low. Optimal is 70-90. Do you have fatigue? Heavy periods with cramps? Bruise easily? Hair thinning?

Your TSH is normal. However, there are people who do not feel well unless their TSH is under 1. Mine is curently .08. I personally was very hypothyroid with a TSH of 1.

Did they test Free T3 and Free T4 PLUS antibodies to thyroid? You cannot have an accurate picture of what is going on without these.

BTW the new TSH ranges are .3 - 3. Most labs have not changed the ranges even though they were changed by the medical community over 5 years ago.

Hi Shay - yes I do have most of the symptoms with regards to the Ferritin (this is iron right??). If the TSH range (new) is .3 - 3.0 wouldn't that then put me in a better picture? - I'd kind of be in the middle then. No - she didn't do the T3 or T4 - wish she had. I may ask her about that - if the range she's looking at is 6.0 than it seems that mine is on the low side - maybe she'll send me for a more accurate picture - esp. if I can't resolve the celiac thing and my biopsy comes back clear. I just ate dinner with gluten and once again feel awful. I'd love to try gluten-free to see how I feel, but I would rather get the biopsy done first.

Thanks for your input - somehow I'll find out what's going on. This a.m. I was at my worst. I was so exhausted at work I kept having to put my head down on my desk - plus I was feeling sick and my head had that awful foggy feeling. I had eaten two pieces of toast on the way to work. I'm not going to know what's going on until my doctor runs full tests in my opinion.

Have no idea how long the wait will be for a biopsy. One of the posters on here is from my city in Canada and she waited 4 or 5 months to see a gastro! And she is positive for celiac...(yes our medical system is good here because everybody has access to the best medical care - however specialists can have atrocious wait lists)...

Very much appreciate your input as always (BTW - I don't know if you saw another post that I mentioned this on - but my little 3 year old daughter's name is Shae - very pretty name!) :)

Yes I did. I commented. Shay is my family nickname for me. My birth name is Sharon. :)

I believe you can get to the bottom of it. Maybe you can use that old range of 6 to get further testing done. So use it to your advantage. The point I was trying to make though is that some people (including me) are hypo at a TSH of 1 (regardless of the range). Normal is what is normal for you. And that is what you have to find out. Knowing the Free T4 and Free T3 can let you know if you ca safely try thyroid meds to see if they will help you.

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—
