Hives After Giving Up Gluten

Hi All,

I recently found out that I am gluten and dairy intolerant about four weeks ago. I have kept off both ever since and have been feeling better and better. My joints have stopped aching, my concentration is wonderful and I can actually run up and down the stairs. However two days after I began feelling better than I have in years and years, I began to get hives on the upper part of my body. I suspect that it is a healing crisis - as I would always itch when I ate too much gluten - and come out in eczema patches. I still feel pretty good in myself - but just wondered if anyone else had experienced this.

Best - amethsyt108

I developed hives and intense itching and rash after going gluten-free. It turned out to be coming from soy; if you substitute gluten-free food for gluten you may find that most of them put soy in when they take gluten out. Or it could be an intolerance of some other food; often these show up when we eliminate gluten. Try eliminating most allergens, i.e., corn, soy, eggs, nuts, nightshades, for example, and then adding them back in one at a time every 2-3 days and see if you can find the culprit. Good luck in your sleuthing.

Hi Mushroom,

Thanks for your helpful reply. I realized that I had started take fish oil capsules the week before and it was shortly after this that the hives appeared. I do have a problem with gelatin and soy, eggs, corn and potatoes, + tuna and trout - so there could have been a variety of fish oils in the gelatin capsule I think. It was fish gelatin which I thought wouldn't matter - but somehow the combination didn't work.

They are fading but still itch and currently migrating around my body. So far they haven't reached my face thank god!

Thanks for your help.

All the best - Amethyst108

It looks like their most recent clinical trial just finished up on 5-22-2025.

Dear Scott,  please check the link https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT05574010?intr=KAN-101&rank=1 What do you think about it?

KAN‑101 is still very much in development and being actively studied. It has not been dropped—rather, it is advancing through Phases 1 and 2, moving toward what could become the first disease‑modifying treatment for celiac disease. https://anokion.com/press_releases/anokion-announces-positive-symptom-data-from-its-phase-2-trial-evaluating-kan-101-for-the-treatment-of-celiac-disease/

Thiamine interacts with all the other B vitamins.  Thiamine and B 6 make a very important enzyme together. With more thiamine and other vitamins available from the supplements your body is absorbing the ones you need more of.  The body can control which vitamins to absorb or not.  You're absorbing more and it's being transported through the blood.   It's common to have both a Thiamine and a Pyridoxine deficiency.  Keep taking the B Complex. This is why it's best to stop taking supplements for six to eight weeks before testing vitamin levels.

Yes I took a supplement that had B6 in it, low dosage though. I've stopped taking that. B1 doesn't affect other B vitamin levels?
